Strawberry Shortcake in a Jar Recipe

Summer is almost here! And I am seeing those wonderful bright red, delicious strawberries that almost melt in your mouth pop up all over the growers market and the grocery stores!

Layer the strawberries, freshly made whipped cream, Grandma’s shortcake (recipe following) into cute little mason jars and you have a pretty and yummy outdoor snack!

Grandma’s Perfect Shortcake Recipe:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • About 3/4 cup half & half

Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Using pastry cutter or paddle attachment cut in both butter and shortening until crumbly. Add half & half in small amounts until dough is about the consistency of mayonnaise. Scoop into baking dish. Bake for 15 minutes at 450 degrees or until a golden brown. Cool and then cut into 3/4″ cubes to use in your mason jars of Strawberry Shortcake.

  1. What a great idea! I love the layers in the jar. These would make desserts for a summer cookout!

  2. I love this idea! It does look so pretty in the jar. And easy too! I can’t wait to try it this summer!

  3. This looks so delicious! The jar idea is great. We like to get our fruit cold in the fridge and cut it up. Sometimes we mix it up, sometimes not. Nothing like fresh fruit in the summer.

  4. Yummy. I’ll have to try these soon!

  5. Looks very delicious. Will have to consider making this one day for one of the cookouts we have at camp.
