#ChildHunger Ends Here Campaign Final Thoughts and Recap

For the last 2 months, I have enjoyed spreading the word about ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Ends Here program.

The statistics are staggering.

16 million children face child hunger in America. More than 1 in 5 kids in the United States don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Child Hunger is an everyday struggle.

Luckily, since 1993 ConAgra Foods and the ConAgra Foods Foundation have donated more than $36 million and 275 million pounds of food to Feeding America. The five-year $10 million pledge from the ConAgra Foods Foundation is the largest donation ever made to Feeding America to specifically help fight Child Hunger.

As of today, 2.8 million meals have been donated through the Child Hunger Ends Here website. Their goal is 5 million meals and I think they can accomplish that. There’s so much you can do to get involved with your family to help end child hunger.

I appreciate ConAgra Foods so much on what they are doing to spread the word on this real issue in the United States. As a mother, it breaks my heart to think of children going without a meal. Do what you can to help in your local community and make it fun to get your children involved also! We love picking up extra items at the grocery store (just add $5 to your grocery bill and you can buy lots of canned goods and boxed spaghetti) to donate to our local food bank.

No Summer Holiday for #ChildHunger {How You Can Help!}

I’ve been lucky enough to work with ConAgra Foods on their Child Hunger Ends Here campaign the last few months. It’s been wonderful to spread the awareness on this issue both online and off.

As summer approaches, I’ve been thinking of all the fun memories that I can create for my son like games in the back yard, BBQ’s, road trips and more. For other children, summer means a time of food insecurity and empty stomachs. With school being out for the summer, many children that received free or reduced-price lunches at school aren’t getting the food that they need at home.

From an article from The Huffington Post, the Food Research and Action Center explains: “The federally-funded Summer Nutrition Programs, which provide nutritious meals and snacks to low-income children during the summer months, are falling increasingly short of meeting the needs… The limited reach of the Summer Nutrition Programs meant that for the majority of those children, the end of the school year was the end of the healthy, filling meals on which they counted.”

If you’re like me, it didn’t even hit me about the impact of summer vacation and children not getting the meals that they need. Check out the video below of just how hungry children are at school.

It’s scary and as a Mother, my heart breaks for these children. This summer though there is a lot you can do in your community to help your local food bank to keep them stocked!

Help to End Child Hunger this Summer

- Organize a Food Drive at your workplace or child’s summer camp. ConAgra has a great website that offers tips and support to start a food drive. You can also see what resources your local food bank offers.

- Create a Facebook Group and let your friends and family know that you’ll be making a donation to your local food bank. Give them a set date to bring items by your house or let them know you can come by their house to pick up items. Then, make a family trip to your local food bank to drop off a great donation!

- Buy ConAgra products featuring a red thumb tack. Each package that has a code, you can register it online at www.childhungerendshere.com and ConAgra will donate one meal to a food bank.

Help End #ChildHunger with Hope

When I was younger I remember listening to all my my favorite songs over and over while looking at the CD jacket trying to memorize all the lyrics. I loved reading all of the lyrics of each song and relating them to my life and singing the songs over and over again.

It seems now I hardly ever have any lyrics memorized (It must be the Mommy-brain!) and if I do it’s the theme song to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. As part of being an ambassador of the ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign, I’ve been hooked on the song “Here’s Hope” performed by Jewel. It’s a beautiful song and you can also hear it performed by Owl City and Jay Sean.

I finally was able to sit down and actually read these meaningful lyrics and I would love for you to also.

Here’s Hope

(Here’s hope)
(Here’s hope)
(Here’s hope)

Everywhere everybody needs a neighbour
Showing up when times get hard
But there’s friends of sons and daughters
Saying grace without supper in your backyard
Who doesn’t wanna be a hero?
At least a little bit of helpin’ out
There’s some things you’re never gonna help or change
But hunger’s somethin’ we can turn around

Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Showin’ up at your front door
Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Yeah what everybody’s looking for
Here’s your one chance to make a difference
Here’s your one choice to give a helping hand
There’s room at the table for more
Yeah here’s hope
Yeah here’s hope

There’s a small-town girl in third grade
Makin’ sure her sisters get enough
She sees her mama working two jobs worrying and crying,
Doing everything but giving up
If a miracle’s a gift when you need it
Then it’s time for stepping in
Here’s to families and kids, where ever you live
Never ever wondering again

Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Showin’ up at your front door
Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Yeah what everybody’s looking for
Here’s your one chance to make a difference
Here’s your one choice to give a helping hand
There’s room at the table for more
Yeah here’s hope

Here’s to going to bed not hungry
Here’s to changing the story
Here’s to bigger hearts and brighter days
Let me hear you sing it for me
Let me hear you sing it for me

Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Showin’ up at your front door
Here’s hope (here’s hope)
Yeah what everybody’s looking for
Here’s your one chance to make a difference
Here’s your one choice to give a helping hand
There’s room at the table for more
Yeah here’s hope (here’s hope)
Yeah here’s hope (here’s hope)

Yeah here’s hope (here’s hope (yeah here’s hope))
Yeah here’s hope (here’s hope (yeah here’s hope))
Yeah here’s hope

What do you think of the “Here’s Hope” lyrics?

Make sure to check out this video of Hunter Hayes, who wrote the song with Luke Laird and Barry Dean talking about the song.

Help End #ChildHunger and Make Peanut Butter Popcorn

Since becoming  a ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Ends Here Ambassador, I’ve become even more passionate in spreading the word of what we can do as a community to end Child Hunger. I’ve been talking to my son’s school about having a food drive during the summer classes and organizing a time to volunteer at our local food bank.

If you’re looking for something easy and delicious (Yes, delicious!) you can do to help end Child Hunger, then make some Peanut Butter Popcorn!

While at the grocery store, search for specially marked ConAgra products that feature a red thumb tack. For each specially marked ConAgra Foods you purchase and register online, you will help buy a meal for a child at your local Feeding America food bank. You’ll also get a download of an original song called “Here’s Hope” performed by Jewel, Owl City or Jay Sean.

This weekend I decided to make a delicious treat of Peanut Butter Popcorn for my family and with that I was able to donate two meals for a child at my local Food Bank. It’s THAT easy!

Ingredients

- 2 packages of Orville Redenbacher Popcorn

- 1/4 cup of creamy Peter Pan Peanut Butter

- 1/2 cup of margarine

- 3/4 cup of brown sugar

- 20 large marshmallows

Create

- In a large pot on stovetop, mix together marshmallows, brown sugar and margarine until completely melted and smooth. Add in Peter Pan Peanut Butter until completely blended. You can also do this in the microwave.

- Pour mixture over popped Orville Redenbacher Popcorn and mix together quickly.

- Enjoy!

It’s just that easy – make sure to buy the specially marked packages of ConAgra foods and you’re helping to make sure one less child goes to sleep hungry.

Help End #ChildHunger: The Top 11 Items Food Banks Need

With nearly 1 in 5 children in the United States not knowing where their next meal is coming from, my family makes sure to do our part in helping to end Child Hunger.

ConAgra Foods is continuing to work towards ending child hunger by joining forces with Feeding America to engage families across the United States and inspire them to get involved. Feeding America and the ConAgra Foods Foundation have collectively donated more than 275 million pounds of food and invested more than $36 million dollars to combat child hunger since 1993.

I’m looking forward to volunteering at the St. Louis Area Foodbank next month, but until then Hayden and I went to our local grocery store to pick up some food items to donate.

We brought with us a list of Feeding America’s top requested non-perishable items so we could make sure we were buying only what we needed.

Top Requested Non-Perishable Food Items

- Cereal

- Pasta

-  Rice

- Canned fruits and vegetables

-  Canned meals such as soups, chili, pasta

- 100% juice

- Peanut butter

-  Pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce

- Macaroni & cheese

- Canned protein – tuna, chicken, turkey

- Beans – canned or dry

All of the items above don’t cost much at all. You could get several items if you would spend just $5 on your next grocery trip to donate to your local food pantry. You can visit Feeding America to find a local food pantry near you.

Don’t forget to search for specially marked ConAgra products that feature a red thumb tack. For each specially marked ConAgra Foods you purchase and register online, you will help buy a meal for a child at your local Feeding America food bank. You’ll also get a download of an original song called “Here’s Hope” performed by Jewel, Owl City or Jay Sean.
