Looking for Fresh, Local and Organic Food? Check out Green Bean Delivery! {Promo Code Included}

With the cold temperatures in Missouri, it’s hard for me to find fresh veggies and fruit for my family to enjoy. Almost no store has anything that looks very good or it’s pretty wiped out. My son LOVES fresh fruit and if he could would go through pounds of strawberries, blueberries and bananas a week so it’s frustrating to visit the grocery store and not find any that are good quality!

My husband and I also love visiting Farmer’s Markets in the summer and buying local. We love being able to help the community, in addition to eating organically.

With Green Bean Delivery, we are able to do that, even in the WINTER!

Green Bean Delivery is offered in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri. It’s a year-round food delivery service that brings the freshest local & organic produce and natural groceries right to your doorstep!

They bring organic and all-natural foods sourced from Midwest farmers and artisans whenever possible directly to local consumers’ homes. The company’s network of local farmers and artisans and year round service gives members a healthy alternative to conventional grocery stores, while supporting local farmers and artisans.

It’s so easy to sign up for service with Green Bean Delivery. All you have to do is go to the website and create an online order. You can choose what kind of bin you would like to receive:

- Small Fruit and Vegetable Bin (Perfect for 2-3 people)

- Medium Fruit and Vegetable Bin (Perfect for a family of 4 or veggie lovers)

- Large Fruit and Vegetable Bin (Similar to the Medium Bin, but includes larger quantities and additional items)

- Fruit Bin (6-8 different types of organic fruits)

Best of all, each bin is 100% customizable. A few days before your order is set to deliver, you’ll receive an email with the items that will be in your bin. You can increase or decrease the number of items you’ll be receiving or take out those items you already have to switch out with something new! There’s also plenty of local dairy, meats, bread and other grocery products that you can add to your order. My husband and I are excited to add an order of grass-fed ground beef to our next delivery in addition to some fresh bread.

In your account, you can give the driver instructions on where to leave the bin at your house. I was able to leave a note that I’d like my bin under the carport and sure enough, when I arrived home on delivery day, my bin was waiting for me!

The bin was packed with an insulated liner and ice packs, along with all of our food. Everything was packed carefully in paper and plastic bags and it all looked delicious and fresh! None of that sad produce you’ll find at the grocery stores this time of year!

Green Bean Delivery also has a great policy where if you are not satisfied with an item, simply contact Customer Service via email or phone and they will replace the item if you contact them by 9 a.m. the day after your delivery. If replacement is not available or needed, we are happy to place a credit on your account.  This credit will reflect on your next order.  Feedback must be received within two weeks of your order to be eligible for a credit.

Check out what I received in my $35 Small Fruit and Vegetable Bin:

- 5 Small Yukon Gold Potatoes

- 1 Bunch of Broccoli

- 1 Bunch of Celery

- 1 Sweet Yellow Onion

- 4 Murcott Honey Mandarin Oranges

- 3 Lemons

- 5 Gala Apples

- 1 pound of Strawberries

- 3 Bananas

- 4 Roma Tomatoes

- 1 Bunch of Romaine Lettuce

We thought this was such a great deal for organic and local fruit and vegetables! You can choose to have the bin delivered to your home or workplace weekly or biweekly and it’s easy to suspend your service for a few weeks too.

The Green Bean Delivery site is a great resource too. They have lots of delicious and healthy recipes, news about local farmers and the community and articles about staying healthy.

Top 5 Places in St. Louis For Kids…That’s Free

Top 5 Places in St. Louis For Kids…That’s Free

By Denise Bertacchi

Why is St. Louis such a great town for families? It’s because of the freebies! Thanks to our Metro Zoo-Museum Tax district a lot of our best attractions charge no admission. See, sometime your tax dollars actually pay for something fun.

Here’s my top five favorite places to take the kids, no charge.

1)      The St. Louis Zoo: This one is a no-brainer. We have one of the very best zoos in the country (don’t just take my word for it) and there’s no entrance fee. If plan ahead, you can visit the zoo completely on the cheap. You’ll need to get there early to grab some free street parking and during the first hour the zoo is open you’ll also get free admission to the Children’s Zoo. In the winter, the zoo opens at 9am.

2)      The St. Louis Science Center: Another great St. Louis institution that kids love! The Science Center doesn’t charge admission and you can get free parking by entering from the Planetarium side in Forest Park. Most of the activities in the Science Center are free—and be sure to stick around for the science demonstrations, like when they explore gravity by dropping stuff off the balcony.

3)      The Missouri Botanical Garden: Shaw’s Garden (as we old timers know it) is part of the museum district, but they only offer locals free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings before noon (kids under 12 are always free to the main garden). You’ll need to show your driver’s license to prove you’re a resident of St. Louis City or County to get this freebie. The garden is beautiful year-round—in the winter be sure to check out the tropical Climatron. But the real fun for kids starts this spring when the Children’s Garden reopens for the season. The Children’s Garden is free for kids under 2 and anyone over 13. Tickets for kids are normally $5 for non-members, but they’re offering free admission on Saturdays before noon.

4)      Powder Valley Nature Center: This park tucked into the wilds of Kirkwood is run by the state conservation department and has a totally free nature museum that little kids love. Kids can explore a tree house, play with animal puppets, check out a real bee hive and so much more. If the weather is nice you can take your family on a hike through the woods on a paved trail. The handicap accessible trail is good for starters—super flat and short. The others are massively hilly and a over a mile long.

5)      Laumeier Sculpture Park: Laumeier is a St. Louis County Park in Sunset Hills that puts art out in the open where kids can really get into it. Sculptures are out in the fields and hidden on the trails, so you can enjoy a nature walk AND get a little culture. There’s also an indoor museum, so if you didn’t bring your dog for the hike you’ll want to check that out too.

Escape from Planet Earth is a 3D animated family comedy that catapults moviegoers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA’s no-nonsense chief Lena (Jessica Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary’s warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (William Shatner) it’s up to scrawny, risk-averse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure-hungry son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit).

Microsoft Store Now Open in St. Louis! #STL

The Microsoft Surface was released on October 26th, the same day that the new Microsoft Store opened up in St. Louis for the Holidays! My husband and I love seeing new technology and couldn’t wait to see the Surface, so we headed to the St. Louis Galleria to get a peek!

Once we got there, it was packed! The new pop-up store is located on the lower level of the St. Louis Galleria, across from J. Crew and right next to a fountain as my son so much loved!

There were lots of Microsoft employees to explain the new Microsoft Surface and also Windows 8, which was released the same day. My husband and I waited in line so we could get our hands on the Surface.

The Surface was very smooth and I love the selection of apps! The keyboard is definitely one of my favorite features though!

Have you been able to take a look at the Microsoft Surface? If you’re in St. Louis, make sure to visit the store!

Disclosure: I am part of the Windows Champions Program and receive incentives from Microsoft to blog about its products.
