We had a FANTASTIC time this past weekend learning about the movies Real Steel (in theaters October 7th!) and The Muppets (in theaters November 23rd!).

This week’s topic is: What’s your toddler’s go-to toy? You know, the toy that can always calm them down, distract them!

Thank you to The Education of a Stay at Home Mom for the topic!

Hayden’s favorite toys are action figures. He loves to play with them and they explore our house, the 3 pirate ships we own and more. I’ve honestly been thinking of getting him a sort of dollhouse because he loves imaginative play. There are always about 4 action figures in my purse (Right now? Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Jack Sparrow and a soldier) and if he is having a fit I can pull one out and he will be quiet.

Here’s Hayden with his latest toy, a robot named Midas.

No hesitation, Hayden is my little Animal. He’s a little wild, a little crazy, a little messy and he likes to play the drums!

I even had to get him an Animal shirt!

This week’s featured Blog is 3 Princess Academy who suggested this week’s topic: Making the switch from crib to bed/toddler bed.

I feel a little behind with getting Hayden into a toddler bed. He’s 3.5 but still in his crib. He LOVES his crib and when he wakes up, he likes to hang out, reading books, etc.

I’ll admit, I have a fear of when we put him in a bed, his 3 hour daily naps will end. I know it’s time though and when we get back home from Disney, we have a twin bed we are going to put in his room. His room is already extremely toddler proof, with everything bolted to the walls, and I’m thinking we will have a gate for the doorway.

What are your trips for making the switch and making sure they stay down for naps?

This week’s featured Blog is Lil’ Bit of Us who suggested This Week’s Topic:

Dropping Your Children off at Daycare: Tips and Advice

Hayden has always stayed home with me until just this summer. We decided that it was time for him to go to a summer camp, to get some daily interaction with other kids and some structure. It was a tough transition. He wasn’t used to being in a group setting, moving from one activity to the other and having snack at a specific time. At home, we kind of do whatever works for us that day.

He was only in the summer program for a few weeks, but now he is officially in “pre-school”. I read up a lot about it and wrote a Prepping for Preschool post a few weeks ago. I think a lot of it makes sense for daycare also. I believe that you should always stay enthusiastic, don’t prolong good-byes and let them bring a security object.

Hayden is loving pre-school and doesn’t even want to say good-bye to me!

What are your tips and advice?

Food Allergies

If your child doesn’t have food allergies, what do you to to make yourself aware of others? Do you have questions on how to support parents whose children do?

Hayden doesn’t have a food allergy, but I am starting to be very aware of it since he has started preschool. His classroom is a peanut and tree nut free classroom. When it’s Hayden’s turn to bring snacks in, I will have to make sure that whatever we bring in is store bought and nut free.

I can’t imagine how scary it is for your child to have a food allergy. There are some children who can suffer greatly just from coming into contact with nuts.

To me, it’s not worth endangering another child’s life, so I will be careful to never send Hayden to school with anything nuts in his lunch.

Does your child have a food allergy?

Tips for building your toddlers vocabulary

I believe the best thing to build a toddler’s vocabulary is just to constantly talk! Point out everything to them, tell them what you are doing, what you are seeing, etc!

I probably sound crazy, but whenever I’m in Target or the grocery store, I am always singing and talking to Hayden. I think it’s good though because he’s always chatting and signing songs back at me.

Recently, he’s also been loving to do flash cards. We have a few toddler apps on my iPhone and iPad that he likes, but his favorite are these Eric Carle Flash Cards. Because of these, he knows the names of so many different animals and all his letters!

What do you do to help build your child’s vocabulary?

This Week’s Topic:
Do you use a reward system/charts with your toddler? How’s it working out?

I don’t use a chart right now with Hayden, but I’m starting to think it would be a good idea. Hayden’s choice of rewards are fruit snacks and it’s been working well for potty training.

Hayden likes to be a big helper and he also likes stickers so I think a chart where he gets a sticker for cleaning up his room, cleaning up the living room, etc, would be very helpful!

I found these great chore charts over at Motherhood on a Dime that I am going to use!

I’d love to hear what you do with your toddlers!

How do you keep your toddler entertained in difficult situations – grocery store, doctors office, etc?

Before we leave the house I always make sure to have the essentials. For us, those are fruit snacks, juice boxes and my iPhone.
I know when we are waiting in line or waiting at the doctor’s office, that he will need to be occupied. If he finishes his snack, I always whip out my iPhone. Hayden has a folder of games that he loves to play.
Not only are they fun, but they are also educational. They also keep him HAPPY!

This Week’s Topic: How does your toddler’s mealtime go usually?

(How do you deal with not eating, or picky eaters?)

Thanks to The Many Adventures of a Modern Hippie Mama for this weeks topic.

Hayden used to not be a picky eater at all. He would eat almost anything I made him, but he has always preferred yogurt and strawberries over ANYTHING. He would eat a pint of strawberries every day if I let him!

Lately, he has been a total grazer. All he wants to do is eat all.day.long.

He wakes up and has some fruit and half a waffle. A little later, the rest of that waffle.

Then, he just wants fruit, yogurt, fruit snacks all day in little amounts.

He doesn’t like to sit down and eat a full meal anymore! The only time he will really do that is if we go out to eat!

Any advice for a grazer?

Thanks to Photobucketfor this week’s topic.

This is one of my biggest concerns about having a 2nd baby, how Hayden will handle it.
It seems like most people say their toddler or young child accepts it, but then I hear those few horror stories.
When we decide to have a second child, I want to make sure Hayden is really involved and knows how important it is to be a big brother and how we need his help.
What about you? What’s your advice on introducing a new baby?

This Week’s Topic: Emergency Kit for your babysitter. Do you have one? What is in yours?

Thanks Cassie at Crazy Cool with a Side of Crafty for the great idea!

We don’t really have an emergency kit for babysitters, but it’s a fantastic idea! I’d love to put one together and I can’t wait to hear everyone else’s ideas!

When we have a babysitter, I always make sure to have an easy dinner (Pizza!) and jammies laid out. I usually try to buy a new toy or coloring books, so it’s something to distract Hayden when we leave! He’s usually having too much fun to even notice!

I also make sure that they have all the phone numbers they would need to reach us, in case of an emergency!

This Week’s Topic: Vacationing With A Toddler

Do you have any planned? Are you worried, excited? Do you have any tips to share?

We travel a lot with Hayden! We have since he was 3 months old and he is a really good li’ traveler.

The longest trip we have taken with him was 16 hours to Disney World. We did it last year when he was 2 and then again this year. We split the trip up into 10 hours one day and then 6 the next day.

We always make sure to take plenty of breaks while on the road! We hit the rest stops and always stop for lunch. When we get gas, we will let him get out and stretch his legs if he isn’t sleeping!

The best advice I have is to bring a portable DVD player and some DVD’s. This has been such a HUGE help during long car rides! I also make sure to get a bunch of little toys (from the $ store or Target) and put in a bag from him. When he starts getting cranky, I’ll pull them out and hand them to him one by one!

We also will hit the library before we go and fill up a giant bag or books he has never read. You can also rent DVDs that you don’t own from the library so those are new to him too!

Then I always have another bag that is full of SNACKS! These always keep my toddler happy! ;-)

We are leaving today for a 4 day trip to Branson!

When we go on vacations, we will try to keep to his schedule as close as we can, but it’s not always possible to go back to the hotel for some nap time. Hayden always falls asleep in his stroller usually!

As for bedtime, he was sleeping in a pack n play whenever we traveled until last fall. Now, he sleeps in a bed with us and has no problem going to sleep! We have a pretty good traveler on our hands!

This Week’s Topic: How are you keeping your toddler busy this summer?

Even though Hayden wasn’t in school, it seems just as summer has hit, he is bouncing off the walls! In fact, he usually will run around the house yelling, Run! Run!

He started his first day of summer camp yesterday. We had to get him into something! He’s only going 2 days a week but we wanted to ease him into it! He had a lot of fun!

I’m thinking we are going to have to spend a lot of park time and Children’s museums this summer to keep him BUSY!
He’s such an active toddler!

I would love to hear some more suggestions on how to keep a toddler BUSY!

This Week’s Topic: What is your toddlers current catch phrase? You know, the one they say over and over again.
Oh, now this is easy! I love this question! My son says all day long, “Ahoy! Ahoy matey! Argh”. He is definitely pirate obsessed right now. He definitely thinks he is a pirate and can turn anything into a pirate situation.
The best thing was we were at the store the other day and he saw 2 men with tattoos, black hats and beards. I don’t know why, but he associated them with pirates and yelled to them, “Pirates! Pirates! Ahoy!”.

This Week’s Topic:Traveling with a Toddler (Revisited)

Traveling with a toddler definitely doesn’t have to be hard! My advice is to plan! If you like to make lists, make them!

We have been traveling with Hayden since he was 3 months old. It wasn’t too bad when he was that little even though we had a lot to bring with us. Since he is a toddler, it’s a little more difficult to keep him occupied.

We always drive when we travel so I start by buying him cheap toys from the $1 store or Target. We also go to the library and pick out a ton of books. Then I always fill his backpack with toys and books. We also have another bag that is filled with toys he hasn’t seen so I can give them to him.

It’s best to keep on the same schedule that you are usually on, but sometimes it just can’t happen! When we went to Disney World in March, we tried to go back to the hotel for a nap, like we would at home. He would usually be so keyed up he couldn’t fall asleep but we would still try and have some down time.

Make sure to bring a lovey or blanket that they are comfortable with since you are sleeping away from home! Hayden loved having his!

What tips do you have for traveling with a toddler?

This Week’s Topic: What is your toddlers bath time routine?

If I was writing this post a month ago, I would say that we have a great bath time routine! Lately though Hayden has really been struggling with his bath. He does NOT want to take a bath.  Once he gets in the bath he loves it and then doesn’t want to get out.

We used to be able to get him undressed and TRY to have him sit on the potty and then into the bath.

Now he fights me until he gets in the tub where he happily plays. He plays with his toys while we wash him and then I was his hair. He does not like me rinsing his hair so I try to do it really fast.

Once we are done with washing his hair I let him play a little longer!

I have no idea why he isn’t excited for the bath anymore but is when he is in there!

This Week’s Topic: How do you teach your child the alphabet or numbers?

Hayden loves to sing. He can listen to a song 2 or 3 times and then he will be singing right along with it. He will also break out in song at the most random times, like when we are walking at Target and he starts singing Twinkle, Twinkle at the top of his lungs.

We have a song for brushing his teeth and we have a song for when it’s time to clean up. When he hears those songs he starts to do whatever is associated with that song.

So when it comes to teaching him his ABC’s, that was easy! We just sang the song!

With learning his numbers, we also turned it into a song. We even have a song for counting to 10 in Spanish! He can count from 1-10 in Spanish: singing of course!

I find that singing is a great learning tool for Hayden!

How do you teach your toddler their ABC’s and numbers?
