There really is nothing cuter than an outfit of children’s clothes, which is why you should totally make the most of these early years and dress your kids as adorable as possible. If you don’t really consider yourself a fashionista and aren’t sure where to start, here are 10 tips to make styling your kids easy and effortless:
- Prioritize their comfort.
When shopping for cute toddler girl clothes for your kids, don’t lose sight of their comfort. Kids are often very sensitive to sensory input and can be completely overwhelmed by a scratchy tag or a seam that chafes. Their clothes should be comfortable to wear for long periods of time and allow them to have a full range of motion so they can run, jump and bend over.
- Make classics a staple.
There are certain garments that never go out of style: blue jeans, graphic t-shirts, a white button-up shirt. By grounding your child’s wardrobe in these classic staple pieces, you will ensure that they always look timelessly on-trend. Plus, if you plan on having more kids, you can always pass these timeless pieces on to them and they will still look stylish years later. When building up your child’s wardrobe, focus on these versatile garments and you’ll never run out of cute outfit combinations.

- Add in trends.
Once you create a base of wardrobe staples, you can add trendier pieces that might not be in style as long but will make your child’s wardrobe look more current. Don’t try to keep up with every single seasonal trend unless you want to spend a lot of money and time on garments that your child will just outgrow. Pick and choose versatile kids outerwear that you and your child like the most, and focus on incorporating those into their wardrobe.
- Think about their personality.
When shopping for clothes for your kids, think about their personalities and preferences. Some kids really like bright colors and bold patterns, while others prefer more muted hues and comfy jeans. By thinking about your kids’ personalities as you shop, you will be able to choose outfits that make them feel like themselves — and there’s nothing more comfortable and empowering than that.
- Let your kids give input.
Speaking of your child’s likes and dislikes, you should definitely ask for their input once they are old enough to give it. Not only will this help your child build decision-making skills, but it will also make them more likely to wear the clothes you get them because they will have bought in during the selection process. If you don’t trust them to decide what clothes you buy for them just yet, then start with having them select outfits from their existing wardrobe instead.

- Always buy wash and wear.
You probably barely have time to do laundry at home, much less drop off a load of tiny clothes at the local dry cleaners. When shopping for cute little boy clothes, prioritize wash and wear styles that don’t need special laundry treatment. You should also be careful with clothes that require certain washing or drying cycles (i.e., hang dry only, wash on cold only, etc.). You don’t want them to be ruined if you accidentally throw them in the dryer!
- Accessorize their outfits.
Accessories really do make the outfit, and even a plain t-shirt and jeans will look stylish if you add the right hat, shoes, headband or jacket. You should put as much thought into building up your child’s collection of accessories as you do the rest of their wardrobe. Make it a goal to add at least one accessory to each outfit to encourage yourself to take advantage of all of them.
- Buy the right size.
We know that it’s tempting to try to squeeze your child into last year’s outfit or to buy a size up so they can wear it next year. While this may seem like a great idea, ill-fitting clothes will discourage your child from wearing them. Clothes that are tight will pinch and chafe, while clothes that are loose will tangle in their limbs and potentially cause a tripping hazard. Rather than buying a bunch of cheap yet badly fitting clothes, it’s better to focus on purchasing a smaller number of well-fitting pieces that they will look forward to wearing.

- Don’t overdress them.
We totally get the urge to dress your adorable children up for every possible event, but we encourage you to save the fanciest outfits for the most special occasions. Most kids do not like being trussed up in stiff, fancy outfits, and despite your best efforts, the odds of the clothing getting ripped or stained are pretty high. Try to dress them in cute yet comfortable outfits most of the time to make things easier on both of you.
- Try before you buy.
If at all possible, have your kids try on the clothes before you purchase them to make sure that they’re the right size, that the fabric isn’t itchy and the clothes don’t pinch. If you’re ordering online, check the store’s return policy and make sure that you can return or exchange the clothes if need be. Pay attention to the return window and make a reminder on your calendar if necessary so you aren’t stuck with clothes that your child won’t wear.
Styling your kids doesn’t have to be hard, or take up a lot of time and money. Keep these basic principles in mind while you are putting together outfits for your kids and you will have them looking stylish around the clock.
