There’s no doubt about it, reading is fundamental. Not only is it beneficial for your child’s overall academic development, but it’s a great way to get them away from all the technology for a minute. However, for some children, reading can either be challenging or boring to say the least. Now that the school season is over, it is imperative for parents to find time for their children to read to keep their minds developing.
The only question is, how do you get them to read without having to go through a whole song and dance? You make it a whole lot of fun! Below are some ways in which you might be able to make reading more enjoyable for your children.
1. Read to Your Kids – Be Animated
One of the first ways in which you can make reading more fun for your children is to read to them. They can learn a lot about reading by simply hearing their parents read as well. When reading to your children, make sure that you choose books that will hold their attention. Also, try as best you can to bring the characters of the book to life. There’s nothing children love more than a little imagination and animation when it comes to reading. Change your voices and really get into the art of reading. They’ll have a blast laughing at mom and dad as they transform into various characters. It also encourages them to want to read more as well.
2. Act Out the Book (Great for Comprehension)
It’s one thing for the kids to read a book and quite another for them to comprehend what they’re reading. Well if you really want to get them interested in the whole idea of reading, then sometimes you’re going to have to switch things up. For instance, turn the book into a play and let your kids act it out. Give them mini scripts to read from and allow them to use their imaginations to bring the characters to life in their own way. Heck, if you’re dealing with older children you can even turn it into a musical by pairing reading activities with music and singing lessons! They can have a world of fun singing and dancing.
3. Book to Movie
For older children (preteens and teens) you can easily have them read a book that has been turned into a movie. There are plenty of books turned into movies for your children to pick from. This is a great way for them to get excited about reading. They get to visualize what the set and characters are all about through reading, and then see them come to life on a television or movie screen. This is also a great way to engage great conversation as you can compare the book and movie to see which your child likes better.
The summer time is certainly the season for reading and expanding upon what your children already know. These three ideas are certainly going to get your children excited about reading and using their imaginations to gain a better understanding. Whether you read with animation, allow them to act it out, or opt for the book to movie ideas your children are sure to have a great time reading all summer long.
