Just because summer is over, it doesn’t mean beach time has ended. In many places, autumn is actually the best time to head to the sand, with sizzling temperatures fading away making it more enjoyable to relax, search for seashells or even take a dip in the water. These destinations especially, are ideal for a beach vacation in the fall.
Cannon Beach, Oregon
Early fall, mid-September through around mid-October, is often the warmest time of the year in Cannon Beach and throughout Oregon’s northern coast. Named one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic, this is also the time when you can enjoy some of the most glorious sunsets practically all to yourself. There’s plenty of other things to do too, including the Dog Show on the Beach and the Stormy Weather Arts Festival that are hosted this season too. In town, discover oceanfront eateries, unique shops and world-class art galleries.
Amelia Island, Florida
If you’ve purchased one of the Jacksonville homes for sale, you’re one of the fortunate few who can enjoy one of the best fall beach vacations with just a short drive. Only 30 miles away, Amelia Island is a wonderfully tranquil spot to relax with its laid-back atmosphere, moss-draped oak trees and expansive white sandy beaches that edge the Atlantic. Take advantage of the frequently idyllic autumn weather by going horseback riding on the sand, paddle boarding or kicking back and watching the dolphins that frolic just offshore.
Nantucket, Massachusetts
Just about everyone who travels to Massachusetts during the autumn season heads to the mountains and hills to take in the colorful foliage, which means it’s the perfect time to visit Nantucket, a small island off the coat of Cape Cod. Summer is peak season here, which means you can take advantage of its serene harbors and gorgeous beaches without the crowds or high accommodation rates. The water is still warm enough for a swim, and at Great Point you can watch the seals in the surf.
Santa Cruz, California
On the central coast of California, mild temperatures can be enjoyed all year-round, but autumn is often ideal, with the hordes of tourists arriving mostly in the summer months, yet the rides at the beach boardwalk will still be open. Get your heart-pounding on the country’s oldest wooden roller coaster and then head to the pier to watch the sea lions and dine on fresh seafood one of the restaurants overlooking the water. When you’re ready for a break from the sand, there are lots of wineries in the area for tasting fantastic vino and scenic hikes through the redwoods too.
