Oh, Mom, you certainly have your hands full, don’t you? Leisurely trips to the store for one or two items seem like a thing of the past, while you find yourself smack dab in the middle of diapers, housewares, and food preparation.
How will you manage your day if you find that you’ve run out of one of the essentials? What will you do if the kids are driving you crazy and you need a “minute” to destress? What happens if you find yourself on an outing and you’ve run out of bug spray?
We are here to help. We can supply you with 4 DIY recipes that every mom needs to have at her disposal to make life a little easier during these chaotic years. Here we go!
Homemade wet wipes
You know the drill….diapers, wet wipes, diaper genie….check, check, uh oh. You’re fresh out of wet wipes, and you’ve got a five-alarm disaster on your hands. What to do?
Make some homemade wet wipes and have them on hand for emergencies just like these. Cut a roll of Bounty paper towels in half, then for each half heat up two cups of water, 2 T baby oil, and 2T baby wash. Find a container with a tight fitting lid and put the paper towels in, cut side down. Pour the water mixture over the towels and immediately place the lid on top. In a few minutes, the paper towels will soak up the solution completely, and you will have fresh, sanitary wipes that will be gentle on baby’s skin.
Homemade bug repellent
If you are not a mom who has been living under a rock for the past several years, you know that essential oils have numerous benefits on mind, body, and soul, and they can be used for dozens of practical applications in and around the home. For an easy, non-toxic bug repellent, simply mix together a couple of drops of lavender and peppermint oils, and apply behind the ears, knees, and inside the wrists of every kiddo on your block. You’ll be the mom that everyone comes running to when they see that your kids are welt free.
Homemade play dough
Mom, do you get stressed out on rainy days because the kids seem to be at odds with one another? Mixing up a batch of homemade play dough will inspire hours of fun and creativity. Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 Tbsp cream of tartar, 1 Tbsp oil, and 1 cup boiling water in a bowl and stir to combine. Knead in food coloring for extra pizazz, and you’ve got rainy day fun that will last long after the last cloud has dissipated.
Homemade finger paints
Another craft idea you can use rain or shine is finger painting. Store bought paints can contain toxic materials that may cause skin irritation; making your own homemade finger paint where all of the ingredients are known to you brings with it peace of mind, knowing that no matter how dirty those fingers get, they are safe from harm. Mix up 2 Tablespoons sugar, 1/3 cup cornstarch, 2 cups cold water, and 1/4 cup clear liquid dish soap. Add a few drops of food coloring and mix to the desired hue, and away you go!
So take a deep breath…….there are many DIY solutions to the needs that you have as a mom and caregiver to your busy kids. With these easy recipes using materials that you have on hand, it is our hope that we just assisted you in creating a smooth and efficient day with the kiddos. Now if we could just guarantee that tomorrow would be just as smooth!
