4th of July is almost here and my son and I decided to get in on the fun by making a Pizza Flag at home. It was super easy to do with a preschooler and not to mention delicious! I found the recipe off of It is Good to Know, which has lots of great recipes.
Using only 6 ingredients, my son was so excited to get started on this meal. With just a little direction, he was able to almost put the whole pizza together himself!
The only thing Hayden wasn’t able to do was cut the stars out of the cheese and let me admit it – I had trouble too! I just couldn’t get the right shape of the stars by cutting freehand. Also, a note when you’re making this: make sure you don’t make the stars TOO big otherwise it melts and it doesn’t really look like stars!
This is more like a Red, White and Green {using Spinach Leaves} flag, but it’s delicious and fun to eat!
- 2 mozzarella cheese slices
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, rinsed and patted dry
- 1 ready made pizza dough
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 2 plum tomatoes, sliced in half lengthwise and cut into slices
- Take two slices of mozzarella cheese and stack together. Use kitchen scissors or small knife to cut small star shapes out of the cheese slices.
- Preheat oven to 450°. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add spinach and cook until wilted, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Stretch pizza dough to fit a rectangular pan. Spread pizza sauce evenly over dough.
- Lay spinach over top left corner of dough. Place stars on the spinach.
- Alternate shredded cheese and cut tomatoes to make up the stripes of the flag.
- Bake 10 to 20 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is starting to brown. Remove from oven and enjoy!
Make sure to check out my idea for Patriotic Pound Cake which would be the perfect dessert for the Flag Pizza!

That’s a cute idea! a great way to help kids feel involved and also good reason to talk about the meaning of the holiday while they’re busy! This is a great recipe, too. I love making pizza and haven’t done it in a while! My fav has become to cook it on the grill!!!
