When moving out of your old home and into a new one, it’s likely that you’ll have at least two weeks to pack up before dropping off the old keys. That means you’ve got plenty of time to get the new house ready in the way you want it before you actually have to take all your stuff over there.
This is prime time to get your new property into living, ship shape condition! Make sure you use this period wisely, as never again will you have plenty of space available to you that doesn’t involve having to move everything in and out.
As such, it’s time to get stuck into some household tasks. You’re not necessarily renovating your new home here – you’re just decorating it while you’ve got the space to really get into all the nooks and crannies.
We recommend focusing on the five below, for the time being, and making sure they’re fully complete and out of the way before you have to get the whole family unpacked.
Make Sure the Layout is Right
Are you happy with the layout your new home offers? If not, now’s your chance to change it. If that means whacking a wall down to create an open plan, so be it! Just make sure you’ve double checked if it’s holding anything up first.
This is also the time to see if the kitchen is in the right orientation or if you’d prefer to rip the cupboards out and place them on the opposite end. You should also check where the plumbing leads and how the pipes are laid out, to ensure moving the sink will be a viable choice.
Put Down Any New Flooring
Before the movers get in and bring all your furniture and packing boxes with them, you’re going to want to get any new hardwood, lino, carpet, or even just vinyl stickers down on the floor. If the furniture has already been placed, even if it’s not in the layout you want, you’re just going to have to move it out of the way again. You double your amount of work in doing so!
Get the flooring down now in as many rooms as possible. Start with the rooms that have the bulkiest furniture, such as the living room and bedrooms, and then focus on the kitchen and any hallways.
Deep Clean the Kitchen and Bathroom
The kitchen sees a lot of germs over the course of its lifetime. Seeing as you’ve just moved in, you won’t know how much bacteria it’s dealt with, but you will know it’s likely quite the dirty spot.
The same goes for the bathroom. A toilet seat is made to keep germs moving and down into the bowl, but you still don’t want to use it before you’ve given it the once over with some antibac.
Take some time to do a deep clean. You might want to save this task until the last 48 hours before you properly move in, but make sure it’s on your checklist.
Measure for Furniture
Get to know the measurements of your space right down to the last detail. You need to know how much of the furniture you own is going to fit. Without knowing this beforehand, you could end up having a three piece sofa suite permanently moving into the front garden until you decide what to do with it!
Indeed, you need to know how things are going to fit together in each room, and if they’re going to fit once they’re all shoved in. If there’s barely any space in the kitchen for your dining table, and no room for your coffee table once the TV is in front of your sofa, selling some items now will mean you have appropriately sized versions to work with.
Check for Cracks
And finally, it’s time to see if there are any cracks in your plaster, tiles, grouting, or foundation. Finding any of these will mean a repair job, but the latter is something that could delay your moving plans entirely.
Buy some plaster, caulk, grouting, and get the number of a worthy foundation repair company. These are all good things to have on hand anyway!
If you’re about to move into a new home and you want the process to be smooth and pain free, make the next 14 – 30 days as productive as possible. Do it now to save you from having to remove, work, and replace later on!
