Disney’s Planes flies into theaters today {see what I did right there?} and it’s definitely a must-see for the whole family!
From above the world of “Cars” comes “Disney’s Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.
There’s way more than 5 reasons to go see Planes, but below are my top 5 reasons to see Disney’s Planes!
It’s set in the world of Cars
Planes isn’t a sequel to Cars, but it is set in the world of Cars! If your child is a big fan of the movies Cars and Cars 2 {What child isn’t!?} then they will absolutely love Planes! It’s also very similar to Cars, as it involves a race and the main character is funny and a bit of a cocky racer!
It’s funny
I always enjoy Disney movies because not only is it funny for children but they include some adult humor too. Of course, the main character Dusty is voiced by comedian Dane Cook but in my opinion it’s El Chupacabra {voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, who is pretty much in ALL of your kid’s favorite shows} who totally steals the show! He had me laughing the whole time!
It’s pretty
In Planes, you’ll get to see the world! Dusty flies in the Wings Around the World Rally that takes off from New York City. Along the race, you’ll visit Germany, Iceland, India, Nepal, China and Mexico. I loved getting a glimpse of different countries, it was beautifully animated. It’s also a good way to start talking to your child about places around the globe!
Easter Eggs
I already mentioned that it’s funny, but if you’re a Disney fan, you’ll appreciate that John Ratzenberger makes a cameo in the film even though it’s not a Pixar film. Plus, you might recognize the voices of two planes who have a need….a need for speed.
A Message of Friendship and Dreams
Planes may be about a action-packed race around the world, but what it really comes down to is a message of friendship and to don’t be afraid to go after your dreams! Dusty is surrounded by great friends and is encouraged to go after his dream of flying with the “big planes” in a race around the world!
Disney’s Planes is a fun, solid movie that your kids will definitely enjoy. In theaters on August 9th, it’s a great film to bring your kids to see before school is back in session – consider it a end of summer treat! I know we will – I can’t wait to take my 5 year old to see it!

Saw it Friday. My kids weren’t too impressed and I noticed the Pixar wit was absent. This would have been so much better had Pixar been involved.
Here’s the good news: an article from The Huffington Post recommending four books featuring flying mommies to keep our kids’ aviation buzz going after the movie. Three of these four books were written by women military veterans who flew! It’s a super list to share with parents and teachers, because both little girls and little boys must see women images of women flying the airplanes! Talking airplanes are great entertainment; children’s books about women and girls flying jets are educational!
