Many of us are in awe of other moms in college or recent graduates. Some may even judge them for being too ambitious.
But hardly anyone knows what goes on in a mom’s life who is attending college.
If that life has been your dream too, you’ve got to know the facts from the myths.
Let’s debunk these popular myths for you today!
- Their Academic Performance is Only Average
Moms attending college are expected to struggle with finding a balance between life and academics. It’s assumed that they can only be lagging in their assignments and performing poorly in examinations.
That’s not true!
Many moms make it to Ivy-league colleges, and most do very well; some even attain their PhDs.
Juggling a family and college isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible either.
The key is to learn how to prioritize what’s urgent and necessary. Be ready to recruit help for the children or the research papers.
- They Can’t Make a Career
Some assume that mothers who somehow manage to graduate from universities don’t stand a good chance of being hired.
That’s another false belief!
Recruiters are looking for candidates who are passionate about their field and chosen career paths. And what’s better proof of your dedication than the fact that you’ve held your ground despite all odds?
Moms who pursue a career are relentless, and those who start their careers while bringing up kids are undoubtedly gifted. They’re an ideal choice for organizations promoting diversity and inclusion.
- They Neglect Their Children
It is believed that moms who are career-oriented or who wish to make it to the top of the class in grad school don’t have time for their children.
While it’s true that these moms rely heavily on child-care facilities. They may miss some school events or a football match or two. But that doesn’t mean they’re not involved in their children’s lives.
Many young moms studying in college manage to create a space for their children in their busy schedules. They participate in weekend bake sales and carnivals, go on field trips and have fun family game nights.
Not so often, perhaps, but these moments are enough to keep the strong bonds with their families alive.
- Anything Less Than a Full-time 4-year Degree isn’t Worth It
Many moms who wish to study further are advised to apply for full-time degree courses only. The ones who opt for part-time programs, diplomas, or certificate programs are told they’re wasting time, effort, and money.
Again, that’s not true!
Any academic advisor would tell you that short-term courses at community colleges train for industry-relevant skills. You’ll be job ready with a two-year associate degree or an online master’s while benefiting from the flexibility these courses offer.
- They Couldn’t Have Done It Without a Strong Family Support
There’s no doubt that family support makes things easier for a mom who’s decided to go back to school. But that’s not the absolute truth.
From earning daily bread to earning a degree, many single moms are doing it all themselves.
There’s no reason why you should give up your college dream if you’re a single mom.
Even if your family is not on your side, there’s community support, support from educational institutions, and great friends who’ll be there for you through your journey.
- They’re Supermoms
Moms who are pursuing graduation or post-graduation are often looked upon as overachievers or Supermoms.
This idea is far from reality.
These women are ordinary moms just like you!
But with a strong will and determination, they learn to tackle the challenges that come their way. By the end of their course and a few years into their careers, they evolve into Superhumans, who are not deterred by anything.
Are you inspired by these women? You can become one too!
Commit yourself to the goal. Nothing can stop you from achieving it!
