If you’re a new mom, you probably won’t be very eager to do a lot of traveling. You’d much rather stay at home and rest up, while at the same time, you can bond with the child and get them used to a set schedule. However, sometimes you do have to travel with an infant, and when that happens, you might wonder what you should bring with you.
Here is a list of things you should strongly consider bringing with you if you take your infant on the road. It goes without saying that you will need to have a suitable car seat for your child. Check out this visual guide on how to properly install a range of baby seats properly. Maybe you’re going to visit relatives or traveling for some other purpose, but whatever the reason, you’ll be glad you brought these items with you.
Gripe Water
There are some infants who have nighttime tummy troubles. If you have one of those, you’ll probably feel better if you have gripe water with you.
Gripe water is a mixture you can administer to the baby if they have an upset tummy at night. It will soothe them and help them sleep, and that way, you can get some much-needed rest as well.
Gripe water usually has sodium bicarbonate in it as the active ingredient. The other ingredients are herbs, though those will vary depending on which one you get. You can talk to your doctor about what the best ones to purchase are, and you can check out some online gripe water reviews as well.
Diapers
Whether you’re traveling via train, car, plane, or some other means, you should always bring diapers with you if you’re on the road with an infant. You should bring approximately one for each transit hour, plus extras as well.
You will have to find a convenient place to change your infant along the way if you detect that they need a fresh diaper. If you’re in an airport, there are always bathrooms with changing tables. If you’re on a plane, you can take the baby into the bathroom and get them set up with a fresh diaper there as well.
Wipes
You should also bring sanitary wipes with you if you are ever traveling with an infant in tow. You can buy these wipes in stores or online. If you have a new infant in the family, you might decide that buying them in bulk is a smart move.
You might buy them from a Costco or a Sam’s Club if you have one nearby. You can bring plenty of them with you if you travel with an infant for the various messes that can arise. You’ll want them for diaper changes, when the baby spits up, etc.
Plastic Bags
If you’re traveling with a baby, messes are sure to occur. Infants are great at creating spills, and while wipes help, you’ll also want to have a few plastic bags with you to hold the baby’s clothing or anything else the child soils on the way to your destination.
You can keep used diapers in there until you can throw them away. You can also keep both dirty and clean clothing for the child in a plastic bag.
A Nursing Cover
If the baby is still nursing, you will also want to have a nursing cover with you, so you can have baby mealtime at any convenient point during the trip. It’s legal for you to nurse the baby in almost any circumstances, and people shouldn’t look at you funny for doing it. After all, it’s a natural thing, and the child is sure to get hungry during transit.
A nursing cover gives you a little bit of privacy you can enjoy, regardless of whether you’re at a train station, in an airport, etc. There are different ones you can find online or in stores.
Some Blankets
You should also bring some soft, comfortable blankets along if you are traveling with an infant. The blankets will keep both you and the child warm. If you are traveling during the winter, or you’re going to be anywhere chilly, you will certainly be glad you have some blankets with you that both of you can use.
You might also choose to bring along things like diaper cream, a washable changing pad, or burp cloths. What else you might bring can depend on how long the trip is.
You should be sure to bring along anything that can keep both you and the baby comfortable. That way, you’ll get to your destination safely and happily.
