Technology is everywhere in today’s world, and kids are starting to use electronics at a younger age. However, too much screen time isn’t good for anyone and can disrupt the family’s ability to bond. Instead of playing with electronics, try these fun ways to connect with your family.
Read Lots of Books Together
With younger kids especially, taking time to read together is very beneficial. Try curling up together on an oblong bean bag and reading a few silly books. Reading with them helps them learn to read, teaches them to love reading, and is just a fun way to spend more time together.
Play Lots of Games
Video games are fun but don’t forget about other types of games. Sitting around the kitchen table and trying out a new board game or playing an old favorite can be a ton of fun. Try hide and seek, running around outside, or any other fun games they’re going to love playing over and over.
Take a Walk
Going on a walk is a great way to get outside, get some fresh air, and get a little exercise. Try spending a little bit of time walking around the neighborhood and exploring the area after dinner or head to a local park to go on a hike. Check out everything in the area, from the planes flying overhead to the tiny bugs crawling on the sidewalk.
Cook Something Together
Grab grandma’s old cookie recipe or come up with a plan for dinner and let the kids join in when you’re cooking. Of course, make sure they’re safe when using sharp or hot items, but even young kids can help pour in ingredients or take a turn mixing cookie dough and cutting out fun shapes. They’ll have a blast getting the chance to cook with you and they’ll learn quite a bit. A lot of math, for instance, is needed when cooking, so this is a great time to learn to measure.
Spend Time Learning
There’s plenty of hobbies and activities you might be interested in trying. Get the kids involved as well. Pick something just about everyone can do, like learning to paint better or trying out yoga, and start doing the hobby or activity together. You don’t have to be an expert at it already to start teaching the kids, and you might be surprised at how quickly they pick up something new when you’re having fun together.
Another great way to connect with your children is music! Grab yourself an instrument and start playing together. One of the best and easiest ones to learn is the guitar. You can look around the internet for some great beginner guitars. I myself learned to play the guitar with the Epiphone Pro-1, and I recommend you do so too.
Go Somewhere New
Head out on an adventure to somewhere new. Even if your budget is small right now, you can head out to a new local park to play. You don’t need to choose somewhere far away or a new place that’s going to be expensive. Instead, just hop in the car and look for somewhere nearby where you can have a little fun and get out of the house for a while.
Electronics are everywhere today, but there is still plenty to do that doesn’t involve technology. If you’re looking for more ways to bond with your kids and to decrease the amount of screen time they have right now, try out some of the ideas here. You and your family will have a great time, create lasting memories, and will be away from the electronics for a while.
