Finding activities to do on a rainy day can be a challenge at the best of times, especially when it comes to kids. However, with a bit of creativity and preparation, your house can become a playground with endless possibilities. From reading to dancing to crafting, below are a few fun ways to occupy your kids if the weather is inclement.
Bake a Tasty Treat
What better way to spend time indoors than to bake a treat that smells and tastes delicious? Baking is a great way to keep your kids entertained while also teaching them some basics about how to get busy in the kitchen. Whether it’s cake, cookies, pie, or a more complex dish, kids love to get their hands dirty. Don’t forget they’ll want to lick the spoon!
Have a Dance Party
If your kids love music and dancing, why not set up a mini dance party in your living room? All you need to do is blast out your favorite tunes, or better yet, create a playlist ahead of time so that you can simply hit “play” and let loose! If you want to go all out, you could even hang a disco ball and add some flashing light displays to create the feel of an all-out party.
Get Educational
Being stuck indoors doesn’t have to equal boredom. Educational games for kids are another great option as they kill two birds with one stone. Not only can your kids learn useful information, but they can also have fun at the same time. Many modern educational games are dynamic and engaging, which can be beneficial for kids who struggle with traditional learning methods.
Conduct a Funky Science Experiment
You’d be surprised at how many homemade science experiments you can do with just what’s in your cupboards. For example, you could build your own volcano, build a lava lamp, or mix contrasting substances together and observe the effects. Liquid soap dropped into a bowl of cinnamon, for example, will create a unique dispersal effect known as “scared cinnamon.”
Make Your Own Treasure Hunt
If you have the space, making your own treasure hunt can be a lot of fun—especially if there are three or more people. To make it more official, you could create scavenger-hunt cards with clues that your kids have to figure out around the house. Customizable cards can also be found in craft stores or online.
Have a Read-a-Thon
Kids love stories, so why not make them more interesting by reading books out loud? Depending on how old your kids are, you could all take turns reading different sections and make it a dramatic experience. Or, if your kids are quite young, snuggling up on the couch and reading them their favorite tales can also be bring smiles to their faces.
Break out the Boardgame(s)
Boardgames are another excellent way to pass the time. Whip out some snacks, put on some background tunes, and get ready to be competitive! Whether you’re rolling the dice, flipping cards, or building a Jenga-ish tower together, board games are a great way to bond with the family.
