Last month, I had the chance to travel to Los Angeles and attend the very first press screening of Avengers: Age of Ultron at Walt Disney Studios. Being a huge Avengers fan, this was huge for me and the anticipation was going to kill me as we sat in that theater waiting for the movie to start.
This will be a spoiler-free review because I don’t want to ruin anything for you – there are some big moments in Avengers: Age of Ultron and I know you’ll enjoy seeing them firsthand.
The official description of Avengers: Age of Ultron is this: When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is everything you want in a Marvel movie – it’s funny, sad, full of action and nonstop fun. I had a smile on my face for most of the film because I just love seeing all of The Avengers on the screen together.
If you’ve seen all of the previous Marvel films {this is the 11th Marvel film} and you watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, you’ll appreciate seeing how it’s all connected and continuous. But the great thing is also that you don’t have to see the previous films or the television show because it’s a great standalone film too.
With so many great characters plus the addition of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, you would think it would be hard to make sure each of them get a good amount of screen time. At 2 hours and 21 minutes {one minute shorter than The Avengers!}, you don’t have to worry about that – I felt that everyone got a great amount of screen time and even showed some good back story of Black Widow and Hawkeye which I had always wanted to know. And as usual, it leaves you wanting more and eagerly anticipating the next Marvel film.
James Spader as Ultron
I’ll have an interview with James Spader on the blog next week with more details but he was unbelievably amazing as Ultron. Someone mentioned that he should just go ahead and voice every villain from now on and it’s true. He brought so much emotion and humanity to the A.I. robot Ultron. He really does some damage to The Avengers, trying to tear them apart….and I believe it sets up Captain America: Civil War well.
New Additions
There’s several new additions to Avengers: Age of Ultron including Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. If you watched the post-credits of Captain America: The Winter Solider, then you saw a quick scene with these twins. I wasn’t too sure about them at first but by the end, I absolutely loved that they were a part of the movie. Both of them did some great work in this film and you can read more in my Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson interview. Even my husband said that he thought Scarlet Witch was totally cool in this movie. I think you’ll love them too.
Favorite Scene
Well, it’s hard to narrow it down to ONE favorite scene but I’m going to have to go with the party scene and The Hammer Lift Competition. You can watch the scene below.
With favorites like War Machine and Falcon appearing, running jokes throughout the movie, some fun surprises and just…..THE AVENGERS, this is a fun action-packed movie you won’t want to miss. Avengers: Age of Ultron is in theaters NOW and I urge you to see it this weekend so you’re not spoiled by anything! Plus, I just want to chat with people about it right away!
Wondering if it’s appropriate for kids? My son is 7 and I plan on letting him see it. He’s seen other Marvel movies and watched the The Avengers on TV with an edited version. There’s some mild language [LANGUAGE! You’ll get it later!} and of course, non-stop action and bad guys. There’s one scene toward the beginning (a vision that Iron Man has) that if you reassure your kids that it’s not real, I think they will be okay. But of course, use your own judgement!
Disclosure: Disney provided an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles including travel, accommodations and activities. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
