The new school year has started and Hayden is adjusting from going from half-day Kindergarten to full-day 1st grade. It’s always hard getting to know a new teacher but I’ve been so thrilled to know how much they embrace technology. Our school encourages students to bring in their own devices and have set the students up with accounts from Storia and XtraMath.
I love that there is so much technology out there available to help kids and I know Hayden learns so much better when technology is mixed in. I’m not one to shy away from technology – I think it can help kids and is the future of learning. By keeping technology away from kids, we are only hindering them! But, how do you know what apps are appropriate and helpful for your child? How do you know what a quality app is versus one that is just thrown up on the app store?
That is where Verizon Educational Tools comes in! Verizon has teamed up with leading education service providers to bring you some of the best educational apps for kids K-12 plus exclusive discounts on premium services like Tutor.com, Storia from Scholastic and more. No more searching through pages of the app store to find a good, educational app for your child – Verizon takes the guesswork out of it for you!
You can search for both age appropriate apps and videos for your child and filter by grade level or subject matter. When applicable, the apps and videos will align with Common Core, which is the standard in many schools including my son’s. There’s even sections for Special Education and Standardized Testing. If you’re wondering what an app or video is about, you can read the reviews and ratings from teachers and educational professionals.
I even love that they have a Creative Expression section. My son has a huge imagination and he loves anything creative. Here, he can find apps that encourage painting and drawing, music, photography, digital storytelling and more.
Hayden loves watching videos on the tablet and I’m thrilled to find educational videos that will supplement what he is learning in 1st grade. This video called “The Sentence Song” is so fun for him. I love that there is a Report Card for me to look over.
Verizon Educational Tools was developed by Appolicious and each app is scored a number between zero and 100. Obviously, apps that are closer to 100 are ones that score higher with parents and educators. We have now found quite a few apps that both Hayden and I love. He’s learning on our Samsung Galaxy Tablet but having fun too!

This is so cool! I don’t have any kids but I did work at a school last year. All the students had tablets and I thought it was crazy but it is just different from when we were in school!

This is a great resource. Apps on smart phones and tablets are becoming the new entertainment for children, but just like TV, not everything out there is good for them to be spending their time on! Thanks for sharing this. 🙂

This is really amazing and I totally agree – technology is getting more impressive by the minute and our kids should be learning everything about it. I don’t know why there aren’t lessons on technology covering all aspects yet – surely we should be teaching them how to write coding excetera from a young age?!
This app sounds really useful though, If only they had this for all categories to filter out the good from the bad!
