Okay, this summer just flew by! I am sure I say that every summer but I can’t believe it’s already back to school time! Hayden started school this week where he is going into 2nd grade. We really tried to stay on top of his learning this summer and I think a big part of that was participating in the . We fought the summer drain brain and won!
This year’s Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” and is powered by Energizer®. Over on the , they had great resources for parents with ideas on how to encourage summer reading. These tips aren’t just for the summer months though, they are great for year-round!
Here’s a few of my favorite posts that I read this summer that I think are perfect for back to school time:
- 5 New Questions to Ask Kids About Books – Just like you can’t just ask your kid, how was your day today, these are some great questions to ask your child after they have read a new book. I love the conversations it can start!
- Books About Bullying: What Every Family should Read – Bullying isn’t something I want to think about but with the new school year starting, there are some great book suggestions to get your kids thinking. Another important conversation that books can help with!
- 11 Books to Ease Back to School Jitters – I think books are such a great way to talk to your child about big events that are happening. These 11 books from Scholastic are great reads to get your kids talking about how they feel about heading back to school.
5 Word Book Reviews
Hayden read through some pretty great books this summer – and so did I! I challenged him to give me some 5-word book reviews on some of those books.
Extreme Experiments – I want to do experiments!!!
Super Fly Guy – So funny and ha-ha hilarious!
The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip – I want to go there!
Please, Mr. Panda – I want donuts from Panda!
I wanted to include a 5 word book review from me, too!
The Girl on the Train – Could NOT put it down!

This was the first year my girls didn’t participate in any type of summer reading challenge. Many years of doing it and they just read every day because they want to!
