“Cooper and Me”, by Monique and Alexa Peters, is a heartwarming story about a girl and her dog Cooper. The girl is anxious and nervous about her first day at school and just doesn’t understand why she can’t take Cooper with her. After all, Cooper would make it all okay. I read this story one time through by myself before introducing it to my kids. While I read, I couldn’t help but put myself in the girl’s shoes. It really does a good job conveying the anxious and nervous feelings. The illustrations are well-drawn and very cute with vivid colors. The colors used are pretty different in a good and refreshing way from most of what we’ve been reading lately.
The story is an object lesson of how parent’s can recognize when their kid is struggling to cope and how to help them through it. The book ends with suggestions of what kids can do when they feel anxious or nervous and also two learning sections related to the reading. The learning sections are designed to reinforce memory and also have open ended questions that facilitate a parent and child connecting about school experiences.
My daughter loved the artwork and she liked the very cute story line as well! She started kindergarten this year and was able to recognize some of the feelings presented in the book. We talked about this and brainstormed ways she could manage these feelings. I would recommend this book especially to parents of anxious kids. Even if your kids aren’t the nervous type coping skills are always useful. It’s easier to teach these techniques sooner rather than later!
The mother-daughter team Monique and Alexa Peters created Cooper and Me. The story is inspired by their family dog, Cooper. Besides having written and illustrated a good story, Monique and Alexa Peters donate a portion of the proceeds to the Happy Hearts Foundation (https://www.happyheartsfund.org). Happy Hearts operates in nine countries rebuilding schools in areas affected by natural disasters. The Cooper and Me website has more information on this as well as coloring pages you can download and other fun facts.
