BPR Designs Glass Art: Review & Giveaway

Beth Reiman has only been a glass artist for the past 7 years, but if you spend a minute perusing her Etsy shop you would not believe it. BPR Designs currently has over 200 listings, each one more beautiful than the last. The woman behind this menagerie came from quite a different background. Beth earned her BS in biology from OSU, an MBA in finance and worked 34 years in the telecom industry as a finance executive. After retiring, she took her first glass art class at Portland Community College and was hooked! Beth declares that it was “love at first sight”!

Exploring the works of artists like Beth, one can’t help but think of the resources provided by Kiln Frog, a company dedicated to supplying artists with high-quality kilns and glassworking tools, enhancing the creative process for glass artists everywhere.

I had the opportunity to ask Beth a few questions:

Is there anything in particular that prompted the change from finance exec to artist of glass?

I have always liked glass of any kind so when I saw the opportunity to try it myself, I thought I would give it a try! I think the rational accountant part of me likes the fact that fused glass can be art and also have a function so that keeps both sides of my brain happy! When I retired I finally had the time to pursue it more fully and once I had filled up my own house, I thought I had better try to sell some (or get a bigger house).

What do you enjoy most about your creative process?

I love the somewhat mercurial nature of glass. It has a mind of its own in the kiln at times, so when I open the kiln it’s always a thrill. Did it do what I thought it would? Sometimes the surprises are happy and sometimes sad….but that is the nature of glass.

What inspires you creatively and also in life?

My inspiration in my work come from nature. I love to garden, love the water, and all the colors out there in the world. I try to capture that in my work.

Where would you like to be in five years?

In five years, I would like to be still puttering in my yard, playing in my glass shop and traveling to wonderful places!

BPR sent me a gorgeous cheese plate made from a slumped wine bottle:



The color is deep and it has the loveliest shine. It was the perfect size for the 5 ounces of peppered goat cheese that we enjoyed with our favorite Pinot Noir! It was like a date without even leaving the house! Beth says that she has spent much time perfecting the art of “slumping” the wine bottles to keep them shiny and with the least amount of bubbles. And that she has! This bottle plate is gorgeous and would be the talk of any cocktail party. How fun to have a melted wine bottle as a conversation piece! And yet it is sleek and classy enough to go with any table setting.

    I love Beth’s designs, especially her soap dishes. They are so vibrant–I want one in every color. The slumped bottles are very clever and a fantastic way to recycle! Nice to see her featured!

    I LOVE Beth’s work and am one of her biggest fans! I could never pick a favorite item from her shop but I can say which items I LOVEEE the green plate, the blue plate, the black and white soap dish, the black and white plates and many more and I am doing this all from memory!
