With Christmas fast approaching, any parents and grandparents who have not yet completed their gift shopping may be starting to panic slightly, especially if the children that you are buying for already seem to have every conceivable gift, gadget and game on the market! Few people consider giving furniture as Christmas gifts, yet sometimes that can be the best option. Why not give the children in your life a beanbag for Christmas this year?
Bean bags as furniture came into being in Italy in 1969, when staff at a company called Zanotta realised that they could sit, in great comfort, on bags of Styrofoam pellets during their tea and lunch breaks. The original bean bag was a roughly pear-shaped leather bag filled with Styrofoam beads and this design is still in production today.
Beanbags are fantastically versatile objects, able to fit into fairly formal rooms and casual leisure rooms with equal ease, and let’s face it, everybody loves beanbags! They are perfect for children to collapse onto after a hard football match or tiring day at school, and they protect and offer comfort from the hard floor when the children are reading, playing board games or video games.
Bean bags also make a great present for the man in your life as they are perfect for tucking into a corner of a ‘man cave’ ready for a mate to relax on, or even for your husband, grown-up son or brother to sprawl on, playing games, enjoying a cold drink or watching the match of the day.
There are two types of bean bag; the floppy soft kind that conforms and moulds around your body and the firmer, more shaped type that is more like a traditional piece of furniture. The filling affects the feel and rigidity of the bag and can range from Styrofoam to polystyrene even to the dried rounded beans which gave them their name! Which kind of bean bag you choose is entirely down to your personal preference and the amount of space you have available – if you are buying a bean bag because it can be tucked behind the sofa or stashed under the sideboard when not in use, you may prefer the softer, more malleable type, while someone looking for something a bit more like ‘proper’ furniture will opt for the solid, firm style of bean bag.
It may not seem an instantly exciting gift for your loved ones, but if you think about the convenience and comfort that a new bean bag will bring into your home, you are sure to be including one (or more!) on your letter to Santa. For instant comfort, a splash of cheerful colour and a spare seat or bed when needed, it is hard to beat a brand new bean bag!
