When we visited DisneyToon Studios for a day of learning about Disney’s Planes {in theaters now!}, I found out that we were going to have the chance to sit down and interview Carlos Alazraqui, the voice of El Chupacabra. I had never heard of him but after quickly looking him up on IMDB, I realized that he’s in pretty much almost all of my son’s favorite shows! Not only is he the voice of the Taco Bell Dog, but he’s also Deputy James Garcia in Reno 911. He also does a lot of voice work and you’ll hear him as King Magnus in Sofia the 1st, Hot Dog {and others!} in the Skylanders video game, Felipe ‘the Phillips Screwdriver in Handy Manny, Rocko in Rocko’s Modern Life and many more! He also does an AMAZING impression of Billy Crystal and is actually the voice of Mike Wazowski for the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor attraction at Walt Disney World, in the video games and more!
As soon as we sat down with Carlos, our whole group was laughing. He was extremely down to earth and had us laughing as he shared stories about his young daughter. Going into the interview, I was torn between Dusty and El Chu as my favorite character, but talking with Carlos definitely tipped the scale to El Chu!
We asked Carlos a little bit about how he got involved with Disney’s Planes and he told us that when Disney calls, you don’t day no! “Disney and Pixar are great storytellers”, says Carlos. He was initially invited to sit down and do a table read of the script for Planes. Usually, actors that sit down for the table read don’t actually voice a character in the movie {Jon Cryer did the table read for Dusty, but Dane Cook was eventually cast} but everyone loved him so much as El Chupacabra that they just had to cast him! After you see Disney’s Planes, I think you’ll agree that it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing him!
I swish my cape at you!
– El Chupacabra
Carlos was such a genuine guy, when we thanked him for coming to talk to us, he said anytime he is asked to come to DisneyToon Studios, he is happy and that he just loves to hang out there! We had such a fun time talking with Carlos about Disney’s Planes and after seeing it, I think he will quickly become your family’s favorite character!
