This time of year is just magical. There’s nothing like getting cozy on the couch with your family while the lights on the tree twinkle in the background while you watch a family classic – – Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Growing up, it wasn’t officially the Christmas season until I viewed it with my family. There was no option to record it on a DVR {just your VCR!}, so my family would make sure that we had nothing planned that night so we could watch the TV special.
I love that I’m continuing on the tradition with my own kids. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the longest-running and highest-rated holiday TV special of all time, and it is inarguably a beloved part of the American holiday tradition. My whole family has already watched the classic once together and my kids have been demanding repeat showings since we recorded it.
I can hardly believe that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has been airing for 50 years – I have never lived a Christmas without it! It’s only right that there is a huge celebration for the TV special which includes a major tie-in with the U.S. Postal Service, tribute promos from CBS, a collector’s edition DVD with new bonus material, a new stage musical, theme park and in-mall entertainment, and a social media campaign – #ShineBright – that celebrates uniqueness in association with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.
Since my kids have been loving the TV special so much, I was excited to expand on that with books from Square Fish, an imprint of the Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group. They have released 6 new Rudolph-themed books that span a variety of formats, including the first ever graphic novel starring Rudolph and company, RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER: THE ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS, by Brendan Deneen. Other formats include a classic storybook, a picture book, slide-and-find and lift-the-flap board books, and a ‘My Reader’ edition specifically designed for beginning readers. There’s really something for the whole family – both my one year old twins and 6 year old are loving the books!
