Growing up, I loved watching all of the latest Disney movies. While I enjoyed the animated films, one of my absolute favorites was the classic film Mary Poppins. I grew up going to after school care at my school and I always wanted a fun nanny like Mary Poppins who was “practically perfect in every way”! As I grew up, Mary Poppins remained one of my favorite movies and I couldn’t wait to share it with my kids one day.
While my 5 year old son has seen the movie before a couple years ago, I was so excited to learn that Mary Poppins is coming out of the Disney Vault and into our home! For the first time, it’s been restored and remastered and will be available as a 2-Disc 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-Ray combo pack and digital HD! Once a week, we enjoy a Family Movie Night and I was so excited that we were going to sit around and watch Mary Poppins. It’s really hard to imagine that Mary Poppins is 50 years old, because it’s such a classic and timeless movie for the whole family to enjoy – my son loves the animated penguins!
One of my favorite things about Mary Poppins is the music. There are so many wonderful songs in the movie, many that are sung by me on a daily basis.
When my son is sick and I need him to take some medicine? I just sing “A Spoonful of Sugar” and he usually laughs and takes his medicine.
My son is acting a little grumpy? I start singing “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and he can’t resist but laugh!
But my one of my absolute favorite songs to sing to my three children is the lullaby “Stay Awake”, which Mary sings to Jane and Michael when they insist they are just not tired! {Something my son tells me nightly!} This is such a sweet song and while I don’t have to sing it to my son as much anymore, I do love singing it to my twin girls and they are usually out like a light.
Stay awake, don’t rest your head
Don’t lie down upon your bed
While the moon drifts in the skies
Stay awake, don’t close your eyes
Though the world is fast asleep
Though your pillow’s soft and deep
You’re not sleepy as you seem
Stay awake, don’t nod and dream
Stay awake, don’t nod and dream
