Looking back to when we first bought our two bedroom home, I don’t think we were really thinking. We knew that we wanted more than one child, but I think maybe we thought we would just get a bigger house. After we had our son, we got pretty comfortable in our house and we just didn’t want to think about moving. We were in one of the best school districts in the state and I loved our neighborhood. So we decided that when we had a second child, we would just turn our dining room into a small nursery. Then we found out were were having TWO babies and our plans quickly had to change.
We measured and moved things around, trying to figure out two cribs could comfortably fit into this small room in addition to a dresser and a changing table. It just wasn’t going to happen so I decided that the twins would take the master bedroom since there was more room and my husband and I would move into the new dining room turned bedroom. I figured I’m only in that bedroom to sleep – and those first few months I wouldn’t even be sleeping, right? But if you think about it, even if you’re just averaging 7 hours of sleep a night, you’re still spending almost 50 hours a week in your bedroom.
So even though we have a tiny bedroom {seriously small, which you’ll see in the video below!}, there’s no reason not to make it a cozy, comfortable sanctuary to relax it. We started with the ultra comfortable iComfort Directions Mattress from Serta Mattresses and then built around that. Check out the video tour below of our bedroom and three tips that I think are a must-have!
– Paint Color and Theme
When not at home, one of my favorite places to be is the beach. When decorating our bedroom, I took inspiration from that by painting our walls a gorgeous blue and pairing it with sandy curtains. Our bedspread is one of my favorites ever – it’s comfortable and I love the colors!
– Pictures
The painting on our wall is almost 8 years old! We received it for our wedding and it’s one of my favorite things in the house. I knew it had to go in our bedroom and then I wanted to make sure that the rest of the room featured pictures of my favorite people – my family! I still need to get more frames and artwork up.
– Mattress
If you really want to create the ultimate bedroom sanctuary, start with the bed. Our iComfort Directions Mattress from Serta Mattresses is the most amazing mattress we have ever slept in. A few times a week, my husband will say “I love this bed” right before we go to sleep. Yup, not “I love you” but “I love this bed!”. Ha!
The iComfort Directions is a premium memory foam mattress line featuring our first dual-action gel memory foam in a sleep system designed from the surface to the core for enhanced cooling comfort and individualized body support. The mattress is supportive and comfortable and is completely shaped to my comfort.
Check out the video below of our bedroom! I’d love to hear tips on how you make your bedroom a sanctuary!
Disclosure: I am Serta Blogger and am being compensated for my time and participation in the program. I am also receiving an iComfort Mattress. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to Serta for banishing the counting sheep from my life.
I absolutely love that painting over your bed. The crappy part about renting, is not being able to do much decorating. Right now theirs a huge wall papered mural of the forest with a waterfall. It’s quite hideous, lol!!
Oh man, you would DIE if you saw what my bedroom looked like. Somehow it’s become that place where we just throw everything that we don;t have a home for.
A good mattress makes all the difference, doesn’t it? A small bedroom really still can be a sanctuary. In our new house, our bedroom is a good size, though we thought briefly about giving it to all three of our boys, taking one of theirs and then having a spare bedroom.
No wonder you love that bed. It sounds wonderful and the fact it can be adjusted in so many ways is fantastic! On a side note, when the video finished, the girls were on there with a belly tickling laughter clip. Too, too cute!
Mattresses are crucial to making a bedroom feel homey and comfortable. It needs to be a place you want to retreat to and automatically relax when you lay down!
I actually quite like my bedroom! We rent, so I can’t paint the walls or do anything crazy (I’m saving all those ideas for when we buy eventually 😉 ), but I have it decorated light and airy with simple patterns and “gender neutral” colors because my BF would be so annoyed at me if I came home with pink bedding, haha. Your bedroom looks nice and cozy! I think the most important thing is just being comfortable in your own room 🙂
My bedroom is kinda blah but I have been making little steps to get it homey and comfy. I will say that when I got a new mattress that made such a huge difference.
I love my bedroom. I just wish I could figure out a way to keep my kids crap from sneaking its way into it!
Ah, that bed looks amazing! We just rearranged our bedroom and I’m ready to change it back again – I think I have less room now!
WE really need to focus on our bedroom. I feel like we’ve spent a ton of time making the boy’s rooms adorable and now we need to take care of ourselves!
We recently redid our bedroom and it feels much more like a sanctuary now. We chose soothing, dark colors and blinds and curtains that block out light when needed. I love it in there now!
It is important to make one’s bedroom as comfortable and safe haven like as possible. A good mattress is a nice place to start.
We redid our room a couple of years ago, pre-baby. It’s very important to me that it’s “our” space and it remains mostly off-limits to the toddler.
I think that no matter how big or small your bedroom, it is possible to make it cozy. My bedroom is not large at all and I still have found a way to make it my own. My daughter has even found a way to sneak her way in at night because of mommy’s “big comfy bed!”
Our bedroom is a decent size, but our furniture inside is borderline too big for it. I would love to repaint too, just to give us something new and refreshing.
I’ve got a Parisian theme in my room.. I call it mine b/c my husband has a cave.. so it’s kinda girlie.. but our 2 year old has a toddler bed in there too.. Bet your mattress is amazing!
Oddly enough, my bedroom is the cleanest room in the house – except for dusting. LOL! I like being able to go lay down in bed and work on my tablet or just relax and watch TV. I even have it painted a light cornflower blue, which is so relaxing!
This Serta Mattress looks great! I wonder how it would compare with my Sealy?
I would love a great mattress! I have to have soft and comfy to sleep.
What a beautiful little space you have!! A good mattress makes all the difference in the world to me. I’m glad you found one that you like!
We also have a 2 bedroom and now have 2 kids. They’re fine to share now, but some day… Hopefully we’ll move, but since the market bombed, we’re pretty much stuck. You have to make it work. Love what you did!
We are literally redoing our bedroom this week! haha. Love the tips! We have a pretty small bedroom too.
{Hiding in the only clean corner of my bedroom}.
I wish — I so need to do something for me.
I am getting ready to totally redo my spare bedroom – I want to make it a very welcoming room for family when they visit. You have great tips on how to make my spare bedroom warm and inviting. Thanks
Warm colors, lots of fluffy bedding, and removing the tv were all part of making our bedroom a sanctuary. Also, I removed all photos of my kids. Sounds weird, but they are all over the rest of the house. I want one room that is just mine.
I laughed out loud at your husband saying he loves the bed, instead of saying, ‘I love you.’ 🙂 That’s a comfy bed. 🙂 I like the idea of having a bedroom you love to go into. Very nice!
When we redid our master bedroom, the thing we were lacking big time was color and texture. Makes such an enormous difference!
I can imagine we all crave some privacy/peace and a sanctuary. I love what you did with your space… Beautiful
Your bed sounds so comfy! We all need a little bit of luxury and comfort, especially with young children at home. I want your iComfort Directions Mattress! 🙂
I rent so my room cannot be painted but can’t wait to have a relaxing sanctuary bedroom! The mattress sounds amazing. I need a new one!
I would love to have a serta mattress. I have heard nothing but great things about them.
I feel the same way about our bedroom, it’s our sanctuary. It should be relaxing, inviting and comfortable.
Our bedroom needs a major makeover. We rarely spend time in there unless we are sleeping so it’s always neglected.
It takes a loving parent to give up the comfort of a bigger bedroom and take the smaller so their children can have the bigger one. And they can’t even appreciate it! Great ways to make that small room more comfortable to the two of you 🙂
We like a really dark room so we had the walls painted dark chocolate brown before we moved in and got some heavy curtains. Also just bought some awesome silky sheets from Belk that I adore!!
I love this, it’s so true, a nice coat of paint can make all the difference in the world! Every bedroom regardless of how big or small should be a little sanctuary, I may have to do some sprucing up after reading this 🙂
I’m working on making our bedroom a sanctuary too! We got a new comforter. I loooove it!
