As a Mom of one year old twins, we go through A LOT of diapers. Not as much as we used to, but we still are changing about 10 diapers a day between the two of them. With that many diapers to change, I need to make the process as easy and as quick as possible. The biggest help for me? The Playtex® Diaper Genie®Elite with Carbon Filter! It sits right next to our changing table and we even have another one in the playroom in our basement. Double the diapers means that things get literally get stinky fast, but luckily the stink is quickly eliminated once I put it in the Diaper Genie Elite.
It has the Ultimate Odor Lock System, a double-lock design that seals away odors each time you drop in a dirty diaper, for a fresh-smelling nursery. The activated carbon filter absorbs strong diaper odors and the antimicrobial protection helps fight germs and bacteria. Together with the Diaper Genie Refill bags that feature 7 layers to lock in the odor, you wouldn’t even know that there are two pails of stinky diapers in our house. Now only if we could do something about our dog!
I had the chance to check out both the Diaper Genie refills and the Munchkin Nursery Fresh refills for the Diaper Genie Elite. In my opinions, there’s a clear winner but let’s take a look at both of them!
Playtex Diaper Genie Refills
We have been using the Playtex Diaper Genie for over a year now and used it with my son when he was first born. I love how easy it is to use and how it keeps the odor in but holds a lot of diapers! The actual product itself is very sturdy and the bags are VERY sturdy. I had no worry of the bag ripping or tearing causing diapers to spill out. When I placed the Diaper Genie refill into the Diaper Genie, it snapped in so easily and fit perfectly. It securely fits in the Diaper Genie letting the lid close properly.
Best of all? NO bad smell! It keeps that stinky odor in and you wouldn’t even know there were dirty diapers in our basement and the girls room.
Nursery Fresh by Munchkin Refills
I also had the chance to try out the Nursery Fresh refills which are made by Munchkin. It looks very similar but I have to admit I like the packaging better on the Diaper Genie – something picky, I know! The first thing I noticed was that it seemed a little flimsy. The blue bag was already popping out a little and when I felt the bag, it seemed very thin and I was worried it would tear! Like the Diaper Genie refills, it can hold an average of 270 diapers but I definitely don’t want that spilling all over my house!
When I placed the Nursery Fresh refill into my Diaper Genie, it didn’t feel as secure as the Diaper Genie refill and I felt like I had to keep pushing it into place to make sure it would stay when I put the lid down as well as force the lid down. As far as the smell, I did feel like it didn’t keep the odor in quite as well as the Diaper Genie refills and that is something that is very important to me with two in diapers!
The Nursery Fresh refills are cheaper than the Diaper Genie refills but in this case, I’m all about quality over saving a few bucks – and if you know me, I’m all about saving a few bucks!

How do you keep the stink out with dirty diapers?
Disclosure: I am a member of the 2014 Playtex Mom Trust Panel. I have been compensated for my time but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh man, I do not miss changing diapers, but when my boys were babies I LOVED my Diaper Genie!!
It’s tough dealing with stinky dipes! We found that only for a year can you contain the stink…. then the poops get too big!
Diaper Genie sounds like a good choice. Don’t like stinky.
We used to have one of these and they worked great. Def kept the smell out.. It just stunk when I would run out of bags.
I so wish we had a Diaper Genie when my kids were small! It would have made life a lot fresher!
We have used the Diaper Champ for the last 5 years. I am so excited for my youngest to get over the whole diaper thing so I can get rid of the poop pail!
I’ve used them both as well. We still have our Diaper Genie and my son is almost two. It has lasted through a LOT of stinky diapers!
My son is mostly potty trained and I’m not missing changing diapers. I definitely don’t miss the smells. 🙂
Sounds like something you’re better off not cheaping out on. Garbage bags and flour are two things I’ll pay more for without hesitation!
This was one of my favorite products when my kids were babies. So much easier than using a plastic Walmart sack with each dirty diaper.
We empty ours every day so the stink doesn’t linger. I like the comparison between the 2 brands
I used that diaper genie and it was a godsend! It really helped keep that gross diaper smell out of the house. Loved ours!
I have two friends that both use the Diaper Genie. It seems to do the trick well!
When we used disposable diapers with our oldest two, I would NOT have wanted to be without my diaper genie. That thing was ah-maz-ing.
I am really so glad that I don’t have to deal with diaper pails anymore. I remember that diaper genie did work well when my kids were little
I am so thankful that I only have one in diapers right now! I totally get your quality of price on this topic! There is little worse than walking into a room and smelling stinky diapers. Thanks for the comparison.
Even though we no longer have kids in diapers, I use my diaper genie for my cat litter. Sounds weird, but it works.
My kids are no longer in diapers but these are awesome. They really help keep the smells away!
I would have loved to have had a Diaper Genie when my girls were babies. We used to just tie them up in a plastic bag, then make sure to take the trash out frequently. This would have been a much better option!
That’s still a lot of diapers! We used a diaper genie, too.
When I worked in a child care setting the ONLY thing we used was Diaper Genie. There’s a good reason! Smell=bad!
i have diaper genie and it is amazing. i love it and it keeps the house from smelling. it is convenient and a great product.
It’s super effective at holding in the odors. No wonder you’ve been using it all these years.
I don’t have children yet but I’ve heard great things about the Diaper Genie from other parents!
I have no idea who I’ve made it through two kiddos in diapers without a diaper genie, but we did! We always closed our dirty diapers in a plastic bag then took it to the outside trash. A diaper genie would have been much more convenient.
We had a Diaper Genie when my daughters were babies. Certainly a great way to keep the house from not smelling like dirty diapers.
I love the Diaper Genie. A must have for any new mom!!
There is nothing more rank than a stinky diaper. I would have loved to have had a diaper Genie was my little guy was smaller. I always used bread bags or plastic store bags to tie them up and dispose. Sheewwweeeee.
I haven’t had a diaper genie but I would have liked one I’m sure. It wouldn’t be bad to have one if the kids (with grandbaby) lived closer!
I don’t have anyone in diapers any more but I had a Diaper Genie with my first child.
Isn’t it always surprising how much smell can come from a diaper from such a little person!
I had a Diaper Genie when my son was a baby! If I were to have another baby it would be a must!
These things really work and are worth the cost! I love that you can get a $25 SpaFinder Gift Card deal! This would make for a great gift for an up and coming baby shower. Thanks!
I loved my diaper genie back when I had babies. They were my fave by far.
This was probably the best product invented for diapers! Love the Diaper Genie!
We use these too! They’re great for keeping the stink down!
We had a diaper genie when my little ones were small and it was a nice way to get rid of disposables without making the house smelly.
What a great idea! Those diapers are real stinkers, lol
Diaper Genie All the Way! We are getting ready to have our third and I’m sticking with what I know will work, for the new mom’s out there, I would for sure suggest the Genie!
Nice to know that there is a difference between the two. The Buy Diaper Genie Refills and Get a $25 SpaFinder Gift Card deal is nice.
I have to admit, I am pretty glad I’ve passed this stage. Wish I would have had the Diaper Genie around when my boys were young! It def. would have been sweeter smelling 🙂
Hi! Wow! Two twin one year olds would create quite a few diapers. My son & daughter in-law use the diaper genie too. I wish I would have had something like this when my son was young. Y’all have all the good stuff now! lol Thanks for the review!
