Venice is one of Italy’s most beautiful, charming and interesting cities. It offers something for everyone, including children. Here are a few suggestions to help you to plan a family holiday there.
Introduce your children to opera and classical music
Venetians love music. It is a big part of their daily life, especially opera and classical music. If you want to introduce your children to these beautiful styles of music, Venice is a good place to do it. Most night’s you will be able to buy tickets for operas, gala concerts and musical dinners. The majority of these events are suitable for teenagers to attend. When booking your tickets just be sure to ask if there is an age limit.
For slightly younger children, there are mini-operas, which are held at the Musica A Palazzo. During the show, you travel from room to room with the cast. There is no way any of the kids are going to find this kind of performance boring.
If you have even younger children consider booking yourself tickets for a baroque concert. Ask for seats at the very back, on the aisle. That way you can slip straight out if one of the children becomes fractious.
Enjoy some boat spotting games
As you would expect Venice is full of boats. So, you can play all kinds of boat spotting games. Gondola counting, giving the first kid to spot a blue boat a Euro or finding boats that are being used in unusual ways are all fun. They are a great way of passing the time and keeping the kids occupied while you take in the sights and listen to the tour guide.
Visit a mask maker
Venice is the home of carnival. Every year, thousands of visitors and residents done masks and attend masked balls. So, unsurprisingly Venice is home to some fantastic mask makers. Several of them welcome visitors into the workshop. Some also offer lessons.
Visit the glass blowers on the Island of Murano
If your children have never seen glass blowing before, take them across to Murano island. The Arte al Sole offers family-friendly tours and experiences, which are a great way to get your kids interested in the many crafts the Venetians are famous for.
Enjoy a family scavenger hunt
Scattered throughout the city are several scavenger hunts. These are fun to complete and are a fantastic way to teach your children about the history of this world-famous city. Amongst the best are the Doge’s Palace hunt and the Marco Polo’s Footsteps scavenger hunt.
A little chill time
As you can see Venice is a very interesting city that caters well for children. But, you need to be careful not to overdo things. Every few days take a break from the city.
A trip to the Brenta Canal will take you away from the hustle and bustle. Once there you can hire bikes and ride alongside the canal to the Villa Pisani. Without a doubt, your kids will love the gardens there, especially the hedge maze.
