So Thursday was fun.
Hayden was grumpy ALL MORNING. Screaming, fits, you name it.
I even put a call out on Facebook to see if any friends wanted a toddler for sale!
I figured it was just the Terrible Two’s but nothing would distract him!
I put him in the crib with some toys even though he was screaming and begging me not to. But by this time, I KNEW that he was super tired and needed some sleep.
Sure, enough about 3 minutes later there was silence.
He was asleep!
Rest, right?
I decided to call my Mom and see if she wanted to take him for the evening so Heath and I could have a break and spend some time together. He had been working A LOT so I thought it would be nice and of course Nana said YES!
3 hours later Hayden was still sleeping. I checked on him and he was out!
So I figured he needed it!
2 hours later he was still sleeping for a total of 5 hours so I went into his room and started making noise. He woke up happy, so I was happy figuring he just needed that extra sleep!
He got dressed and we packed his backpack and headed to Nana’s house.
Where I noticed him scratching himself on his back and stomach over and over.
Lifted up his shirt and saw these giant red welts. Right before my eyes they were appearing all over his back, stomach, legs…EVERYWHERE!
I knew that if I called the Pedi (It was 5PM) they would say go to an ER, so I just decided to go. Heath was still at work and couldn’t leave due to Tax Free Weekend approaching so my Mom and I headed there.
Luckily, they saw this wiggly, screaming toddler in my arms with red bumps everywhere and didn’t make us wait. They brought us straight to an Isolation Room in the pediatric ER.
Isolation Room?
Fun!
After that it slowed down. Only one doctor, not many nurses and a ton of kids. I turned on SpongeBob and pulled out Buzz and Woody, which made him happy.
Finally the nurse came in to take vitals, which made him not happy.
We got through it and then FINALLY the doctor came in to examine him. She diagnosed the bumps as hives right away which frustrated me. She said it was an allergic reaction, but nothing had changed in his diet or around the house. No new soaps, food, detergent, etc.
Then she examined his throat and found that he has swollen tonsils, lymph nodes and fluid in his ear.
Okay, now we are getting somewhere. The hives are from a virus that he has.
She took a strep test and we had to wait for the results. He was starving so I was able to go get him some dinner.
The above picture? He scratched his legs until they bled! 🙁
A nurse came in to give him Benedryl which quickly made him loopy and tired.
The strep test came back negative so they let us go with instructions to give him Benedryl every 6 hours and to keep an eye on him.
Sigh.
We went home and he fell asleep right away. He is doing MUCH better but it is so frustrating when your little one is not feeling well. In my case I had NEVER seen hives before (and you other Moms may laugh at me!) but I panicked to see all those dark red bumps appearing everywhere.
The doctor was kind of condescending saying they see them all the time and now I know.
Yes, now I do know.
Better safe than sorry, right?

I dunno… I've had hives, and they didn't come as isolated bumps like that. It came has huge bumpy rashes. And hives don't result in fluid in your ears as far as I've ever seen.
Hopefully he gets better soon! Poor little guy. Nothing is worse than worrying about a sick kiddo.

OH man!!!
I hate when doctors are like that…you know what..THEY may see that all the time, but WE don't!
Glad he's doing ok and you have some answers!

I had hives once and they are terrible–i had them from the neck down and it's like poison ivy times 100. The itching will drive you crazy–the only thing that seemed to help me was soaking in a cool bath tub with aveeno. If he doesn't get better soon–have them give him a shot–i was covered with hives soo bad that the shot didn't work–went back a week later and the second shot finally did work–don't wait cause they will keep spreading and the more they spread–the longer it takes to get rid of them–if he has them on his back (it's the worse)you will be able to see them spread. Keep him cool–that does help!! Marci 🙂

Hope he is feeling better!

i hate when doctors act like it's just no big deal. to us it is! I remember i went to urgent care with S last summer because he had been up for hours in the night, high fever, limp body, lethargic, etc. It was during the height of the swine flu drama. The doctor acted like i was a nutty mom overly worried about her kid. i say better safe than sorry for sure!
