Your dog gets lonely at home alone and needs your company. You’ve got surgery scheduled to get rid of a bunion and will have to stay off your feet for a bit. It’s the weekend and the forecast is calling for rain. These are all great excuses to sit back, relax, and make your way through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With 25 films under their belt and several shows hitting Disney+ in the past several months, Marvel has plenty of content to keep your superhero cravings satisfied. With their latest movie, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, being released in September, it has many fans excited for the next phase of the MCU, and while there have been numerous delays, fans still have several flicks to enjoy next year–not to mention Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home coming soon. Here are some of the upcoming Marvel films being released in 2022.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The most powerful warlock with a doctorate degree hits the screen for his sequel on May 6th, 2022. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen, this film is expected to blow the top off of the multiverse after a hole was punched in it during the events of Wandavision. It is also rumored to be quite a bit darker than previous films, closer resembling a “soft” horror film (a first for the MCU). Being directed by Sam Raimi and revolving around the multiverse only adds fuel to the rumors of Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man making an appearance in the MCU.
Thor: Love and Thunder
The god of thunder returns to the big screen on July 8th, 2022, and we couldn’t be more ready. The last Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok, gave us a new take on the Son of Odin, one that was quite a bit funnier than previous entries. This was a welcome change after the cold reception of Dark World, and we’re eager to see what adventures are in store for our hero next–possibly as a member of the Asgardians of the Galaxy? We’re also curious about the return of Natalie Portman to the franchise, and the rumors of a female Thor. But there’s really only one question that needs to be answered: has Thor been hitting the gym since Avengers: Endgame?
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Unfortunately, The Marvels has been delayed (along with everything else) until February of 2023, but fear not, because we’ll still be getting the sequel to Black Panther on November 11th, 2022. After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, many have wondered what direction the films would take. It has since been announced that the character’s genius sister, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, would take up the mantle of Black Panther. While details of the film are still unknown, many are hopeful that it will honor the legacy of Boseman while paving a wondrous new path for Wakanda.
Marvel Fans, Assemble!
Marvel is showing no signs of slowing down, and as long as the quality of the films continues to meet expectations, fans will continue filling theater seats. All the dimension-hopping is sure to bring a fair amount of craziness into the next phase of the MCU, and with so many films lined up for the next couple of years, it looks like we’ll have plenty to look forward to for the foreseeable future.
