During my trip to LA for the Ratchet & Clank event, I was able to take in an advance screening of the film. Based on the video game of the same name, this CG animated 3D film follows the story of Ratchet (James Arnold Taylor), a “lombax” who is the last of his kind. Working as a mechanic under the patience guidance of Grimroth (John Goodman), Ratchet is a somewhat reckless but well-meaning daydreamer who aspires to someday join his heroes, The Galactic Rangers.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the nefarious Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti) is hatching an evil plan to destroy every planet in the Solana Galaxy. While assembling a robot army to do his bidding, a “Defective” robot (David Kaye) escapes and tries to warn the rest of the galaxy before it’s too late. When he quite literally falls at Ratchet’s feet, he is christened Clank and teams up with Ratchet for an out-of-this-world adventure. But will they be able to stop Chairman Drek and his cronies from destroying their planet?
Ratchet & Clank is a movie that is appropriate and fun for kids, yet still entertaining to me as an adult. With a fabulous voice cast that also includes Bella Thorne, Sylvester Stallone, Rosario Dawson, Armin Shimerman, Jim Ward, and Vincent Tong, Ratchet & Clank has a talented lineup bringing the story to life – I laughed out loud many times during the screening! Video games attract such a broad age range, so I think they’ve done a great job of making something that will work for everyone in their fan base, as well as people like me who have never played the game before. I found it to be a very cute film that I think viewers of all ages will be able to enjoy together!
Ratchet & Clank opens tomorrow, April 29th – be sure to take your family this weekend!

I wouldn’t mind if they were to make a Jak movie as long as Jak and Daxter’s original voice actors return and if they don’t turn the movie kid-friendly like they did with Ratchet & Clank but wouldn’t mind if it was kid-friendly if they were to base it on the first game.
