Glad Bag Recycled Art Project: “Stained Glass” Tissue Paper Vases

One of my family’s favorite past times is creating art. Along with this fun, there is almost always a mess! It can get wild, and these moments require cleanup! Glad Bags is here to help with those times. They have teamed up with the Picker Sisters Tracy Hutson and Tanya McQueen and Keep America Beautiful (KAB). Together, they are not only celebrating those wild moments but they are helping with the cleanup too, and also smartly finding ways to reuse items that would have otherwise been discarded. The Picker Sisters show others how “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” as they create stylish pieces out of the “remnants” of life’s wild moments!

Glad® Black Bag is working to show the benefits of turning items that would otherwise have been adding to the landfill to treasures and giving them new life. Glad Bags is partnering with celebrated mosaic artist Jason Mercier who will create four works of art utilizing people’s trash or “wild life remnants,” including items collected during GACs from across the country, as well as items donated by celebrities, such as Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon A Time) and Nathan Kress (iCarly). These works of art will be auctioned off during the Glad® Black Bag art auction on eBay through April 26. Proceeds benefit KAB’s Great America Cleanup.

In writing crafty tutorials for the Sippy Cup Mom blog over the past year, I have tried to do a good amount of projects using upcycled items: a chore chart, crayons, draft stopper, a denim bag and a pillow case skirt. That is why I was so excited when I was sent a box bursting with supplies to help me create my own Recycled Art Project using recycled items from around our home. The supplies included a picture frame, scissors, paint brushes, three canvases and a nifty mini glue gun!

Included with the supplies was a box of Glad ForceFlex Black Bags. We love Glad Bags and the different variety they are available in: ForceFlex, Lawn & Leaf, OdorShield and Contractor-for all of the “heavy duty” jobs. The ForceFlex Black Bags were perfect for our current project: cleaning and organizing the garage! These strong and spacious bags are perfect for covering large play toys when we put them back in the garage, waiting for the next kid to move into the phase right for a baby swing or the Exersaucer. We also used the Glad Black Bags for loading up large, heavy loads of clothes to go to the donation center. The diamond texture makes them resistant to tearing. The first yard cleanup of the year yields a large Lawn and Leaf bag or two of leaves, branches and other miscellaneous debri. We’ve used the OdorShield bags for loading up loads of soda cans to go to the recycling center. Febreeze technology helps hold the odors at bay!

I took a trip around the house looking for items to use in my Recycled Art Project challenge. We happened to have a great selection of glass jars in our recycling bin. I also spied some bright tissue paper used to package items in shipping. I took the scissors, paintbrushes and mini glue gun from the box of supplies, Mod Podge (gloss finish), and a few more colors of tissue paper that I found crumpled up in the bottom of a gift bag from the last birthday party.

I washed the bottles, removed the labels and let them dry.

I cut the tissue paper into shapes and sizes. Some abstract and free-fomed and some shaped like flower petals.

Working in sections, I added a layer of Mod Podge to the first jar and then got busy placing little bits of paper and smoothing them with the paintbrush.

I had to be really careful to not tear the delicate tissue paper when it was wet from the Mod Podge. One thing that was nice was that you could carefully move the tissue into tight corners. Add a layer of Mod Podge on the top and you have a nice “crinkled” and glossy finish!

After doing one jar with color-blocked stripes, and one with flowers, I attempted a mosiac type design.

Let dry and there you have it! Art from trash! While I love the art being displayed on the bottles, I also love printing on glass bottles and using those as decoration around the house too!
