Lessons to Learn from a Riverside Pediatric Dentist
Going to the dentist is hard enough as an adult, but having to take your kids can be painstaking. Just like adults, they get nervous about their routine check-ups or afraid they are going to have a painful cavity. But unlike adults, they tend to show their dentist office anxiety a little more by throwing tantrums or crying in the car. A boring waiting room doesn’t help either. Kids only panic more, getting them into the chair fifteen minutes later nearly impossible.
However, I recently came across an interview with a Riverside Dentist, and the way that he treats his kiddo patients has me thinking that I need to start looking for a dentist that offers the same comforts and care. Here are a few of his recommendations on how to both prep your kids for the dentist and how to find the right dentist for them as well:
A Dentist vs a Pediatric Dentist
Prior to reading the interview, I never realized that there was much of a difference in dentists offices. However, according the the dentist interviewed “going to a practice that caters to children’s needs makes it a more comfortable environment, and they are also able to address specific dental needs and concerns that children have.” So skip the regular dentist’s office and find a pediatric dentist.
What Should a Parent Look for in a Dentist?
“Choose someone who is caring and compassionate, and that is active in the community,” stated the interviewee. “Children are comfortable when they can trust their dentist, and we work on gaining and keeping that trust.” I know for my kids, that an excellent prize station, movies, and video games also help make the dentist office a more positive environment for them.
What to do with Anxious Kids?
According to this Riverside dentist, parents should educate their children prior to going to the dentist to reduce any fear or anxiety. If a kid knows what to expect, they are more likely to have an enjoyable visit. The dentist interviewed also suggest reading your child “The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist” prior to their visit stating that “reading that to them the night before can definitely help them ease into going to the appointment.”
Going to the dentist is rarely an event that adults and children alike look forward to, but you can make it a more enjoyable experience by choosing the right dentist and prepping your kids for their first visit. I know after I read that interview, I will definitely take more time to help my kids find the dentist that is right for them. It will not only make my life easier, but will ensure that they keep up with great oral hygiene for life.
