Last week, I introduced you to Unilever, their vast family of brands, and the good that they are doing in the Cross Off Hunger initiative and their promise to donate two million meals to families in need. Unilever is also involved with Feeding America as part of their sustainable living goal to help one billion people improve their health and well being.
The Unilever family has a Sustainable Living Plan that is comprised of three main goals:
1. Improve Health an Well-Being
They will help more than 1 billion people to improve hygiene habits. They will also bring safe drinking water to 500 million people, thereby reducing the occurrences of life threatening illnesses.
2. Reduced Environmental Impact
The plan to reduce their environmental footprint by half. This includes the greenhouse gas impact of products during their life cycle, the water associated with the consumer use of products and the waste associated with the disposal of products. All of these cut in HALF!
3. Enhance Livelihoods
Their plan calls for sourcing 100% of the agricultural raw materials in a sustainable way. They will include 500,000 smallholder farmers and small-scale distributors into their supply chain.
We use Unilever products every single day. It’s not hard to, giving this amazing line up of high-quality, trusted name brands. We have Popsicles and Breyers in our freezer, Knorr and Bertolli in our cabinets, Suave and Dove in our bathroom drawers and Caress in our showers!
Living in a sustainable way is really a responsibility. We have to do our part to make sure we leave this world in the best shape possible, but also teach our little ones to respect it and to do the same. Part of our chore list is the recycling. We teach the two older kids to look for the recycling symbols and what they mean. Also, we do our best to reuse items when we can. The big cardboard tubes that used to hold Oatmeal get fresh coats of bright paint and now house art supplies. The towels that are getting shabby have a hole or two? We cut those down and make cleaning rags that we can reuse over and over.
But also, it is about helping others. And this is what I talked to the kids about as we went on a shopping trip to purchase Unilever products to donate to our local food bank. You can watch us shop in my Google+ album.
It was a really hard subject to broach with children as young as ours. But half of our elementary school lives at or below the poverty line. One way we can help is to donate to the food bank. My children and I called ahead of time to find out what was really needed at this time. They told us that hygiene products were in high demand. Confused, because it’s a “food bank” my children asked why. I explained to them how much being clean impacts our self esteem as adults and kids.
They were so excited for our shopping trip and were eager to help identify the Unilever brands, smell them to make sure they were the best available, and make selections based on what they would like to use or do use currently!
My children chose some wonderful shampoos, conditioners, body washes, soaps, deodorants and Q-Tips to help at the food bank.
Remember when you purchase these products, you are supporting Unilever’s three part commitment to: Improve Health an Well-Being (hygiene and safe water!), Reduced Environmental Impact (less greenhouse effect & less waste) and Enhance Livelihoods (the smallholder farmers).
The lady at the food bank was just tickled to see my two younger children (the oldest was at school) using all of their muscles to bring in the three heaping bags of hygiene supplies. My son was very proud to tell her all about our shopping trip “to help other people” and how he smelled everything to make sure it was just great.

It is so great to know that a company I buy products from is doing so much to give back. I had no idea this was the case. It is so awesome that you donated to your local food bank and great how you got your kids involved too. Thank you for the great post!
