If you want to get your family ready for an upcoming road trip then you need to start by focusing on your car. If you have been stuck in the same dull place for weeks on end, or even months, you may find that your attention ends up drifting to places you would rather be. Although this is normal, you do have to remember that getting out on the road is the best way for you to change your situation. Nothing quite compares to hitting the gas pedal and getting on the open highway, so try and take steps to make this happen for yourself today by getting your car in good working order.
Check your Car
The first thing you need to do is give your car a good checkover. If you don’t then you may find that you end up running into issues that you didn’t realize you had. One way for you to work around this would be for you to take it to a local mechanic. By doing this, you can make sure that everything is in good order and that you are able to stay on the road without worrying too much. Fluids are the lifeblood of your car and service intervals are so important. If you want to help yourself here then give some thought to how long it has been since your car’s last service and take note of how far you intend to go on your trip too. If you are going to be hitting a service station mid-trip then you may want to take care of some jobs now and then some later. Either way, don’t overlook how important it is for you to keep everything topped up.
Check your Oil
You don’t need to be an expert on cars to know that oil is such an important part of the engine. Oil lubricates your moving components, such as your crankshaft, your pistons and your camshaft. This allows everything to move without much friction at all. The recommended interval for you to have an oil change is around every 3,000 miles but you can do it up to every 5,000 miles if you want. Of course, tech has improved a lot over the years too, and now you don’t have to check your car unless you have driven over 10,000 miles. Double-check your manual and make sure that you schedule oil changes within the recommended timeframe for your car. If it is black or if it is below the suggested fill line then it is probably wise for you to get it checked out immediately.

Radiator Fluid
Engines produce a great deal of heat and it is your radiator fluid that helps to keep things cool. Radiator fluid which is a coolant, extracts any heat from the engine and also dissipates it through a radiator. If you have a low coolant level then this could result in your engine overheating when this just doesn’t need to happen. Check your coolant and take the time to top it off every 50,000 miles or so. If you can do this then you will soon notice that things end up becoming a lot easier for you.
Brake Fluid
When you push on the brake pedal, fluid will compress inside the brake line. This will force the brake pads to clamp down on the rotors which helps to slow down your car. If you ever notice that the brake pad feels somewhat spongy or if it has a bit of extra room to move then it may be that there are air bubbles out of the lines. Otherwise, be sure to top up your brake fluid if required and flush it with fresh fluid every now and again.
Power Fluid
Modern cars tend to use power steering to try and make turning the wheel easier. This fluid over time can make turning more difficult if it is not changed out on a regular basis. Try and make sure you look into things like this as it is a great way for you to make sure that you are able to get the result you want out of your upcoming road trip. It also means you’re not as likely to have to stop somewhere to get it sorted out on the road.
Clean your Car
If you can, you also need to give your car a good clean. If you do not give your car a good scrub then this will make it difficult for you to keep it on the road when you’re on a long trip. It’s understandable that you will have to go through a car wash at some point, especially if you are driving on rough terrain, but ultimately you do need to give it a good clean now. Scrub down your number plate and make sure that you get any dents and dings repaired too. If your car doesn’t have a number plate because it is loose or even fallen off then now is the time for you to get that sorted. If you don’t then you may find you end up breaking the law when you’re driving through different countries. If you are in need of a new replacement number plate then you can get personalised number plates online.
Organize
Keeping your car nice and organized is essential if you want to have a good time out on the open road. You need to be able to find a map if you need it and you also need to be able to navigate new situations properly. If you can’t do this because your car is full of junk then this will make it more difficult for you to be successful. A lot of people buy car organizers and things like that to try and keep their maps and their documents in order, especially when driving across state lines. If you want to help yourself here then invest in one specifically for your road trip. Getting a drink holder is also a good idea as this will help you to stay hydrated without worrying about spilling water everywhere when on the go.
Air Filter
If you can, you need to change your air filter on a regular basis. If you do not change your air filter then this will make it easier for you to keep your car on the road for longer. You have to remember that your car is a very dirty place and that cars often use air filters as a way to try and prevent build-ups of dust and debris. Air filters also clear out bugs from your car, so try and keep this in mind if you are driving somewhere hot and humid.
It’s no secret that car care can be a pain but if you can take the time to clear out your car before you take it on the road then this will make it much easier for you to not only get the result you need out of your maintenance, but it will also make it possible for you to be safer on the road. You should also take your car to a mechanic if you are going on a long trip because if you don’t, you may find that you are not able to pinpoint any issues that you may have under the hood. This can lead to a breakdown on the road, but it can all be avoided if you simply take the time to work on things like this now.
