I can still remember being pregnant with my son 12 years ago and how excited I was to pick out his first car seat. At first, I was all about the looks. Which car seat looked the nicest, which car seat looked the most comfortable. But when it comes down to it, you need the car seat that is the SAFEST. After all, it’s carrying around your precious cargo! Once I figured out the safest car seat out there for us, it was important to make sure our car seat was installed properly.
When you don’t have your car seat installed properly, it’s only hurting your child. There are several things you can do before you install your car seat.
Read the Instructions
And then read them again. I swear, my husband and I read that little booklet a few times to make sure we had the car seat properly installed. There can usually be several ways to install one car seat so you want to be sure you are doing it the correct way for the correct type of car also.
Watch a Video
There are many reputable sources out there that will show you how to install a car seat properly. This is great if you are a visual learner or just want to double check your work. I’ve watched videos before of our brand of car seats being installed so I can be sure we are doing it the right way.
Hire a Car Seat Technician
You might not have to even hire someone. You can check with your local fire department or children’s hospital to see if they have someone on staff to install your car seat. There may even be safety fairs in your town where it’s just a whole day of technicians checking cars to make sure they are properly installed. You’ll love the peace of mind of having a certified technician do it.
Check It Again
As you switch from a rear-facing car seat to a convertible car seat to even a booster seat, it’s important to check each time that you’re properly installing it. With three kids, we have had many car seats and we make sure they are properly installed every time!
It’s so important to make sure that your child’s car seat is properly installed! You never know when you might be in an accident and having it properly installed will save their life!
