Marijuana can be expensive, and stale bud is a big bummer. But no one really teaches you how to store marijuana properly when you buy your first dime-bag. Follow these long-term marijuana storage tips to keep your marijuana fresh, safe, and delightful.
Proper Curing
Optimal marijuana storage starts with proper curing after harvesting the plant. Of course, unless you’re growing your own weed, this is most likely out of your control. This is one big reason why you want to buy marijuana from reputable sources. Before you buy, ask your supplier how the plants were processed after the harvest. A reliable supplier will be able to talk to you about how the flower was cured.
Store Your Flower in an Airtight Container
Oxygen can do more damage than you think over time, which is why you want to keep your marijuana in an airtight container. Choose a non-plastic container, because the chemicals in plastic can speed up the ageing process. That means you don’t want to keep it in the Ziploc baggie your flower likely came in. Instead, we recommend a mason jar with a secure screw-top lid, or a glass or ceramic jar. Choose a nice home for your bud to keep it fresh.
Keep it in a Cool, Dark Place
Light can also mess with marijuana. If you can, store it in an opaque container or black out a glass jar yourself (it’s not as hard as you think). Alternatively, you can keep your container in a dark place, like a cupboard or a closet.
It also matters what temperature the room is where you keep your weed. Marijuana is happiest at temperatures below 78 degrees Fahrenheit, which prevents mold from growing. If you can keep it below 70 degrees, even better. If you can, store it in a spot that doesn’t get sunlight so it’s not baking in the heat all day.
Don’t Store it in a Humid Place
Keep it away from the bathroom, which is often the most humid room in the house. If there’s a room where you keep a humidifier running, that’s a good spot. Ideally, you want to store marijuana at humidity between 59% and 63%.
5 Big Don’ts:
- Don’t store your marijuana in the fridge.
- Don’t store it in the freezer.
- Don’t store it above electronics or appliances that give off heat.
- Don’t store it in a tobacco humidor.
- Don’t store your grinders, pipes, or other paraphernalia along with your marijuana. The ash and resin from a pipe and grinder can stink up the container and ruin your marijuana’s natural aroma. Not to mention, it’ll get your paraphernalia dirty.
If you smoke marijuana frequently, you know how important it is to keep your weed in good condition. There’s nothing worse than spending all day looking forward to a good smoke, only to find your marijuana’s gone stale – or worse, moldy. To prevent that from happening, follow these simple tips and you’ll be good to go.
