Mexico City is pretty amazing. It combines an ultra-modern metropolis, historical neighborhoods that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It also has the population of nearly 9 million people with over 21 million living in the Greater Mexico City. This means that despite all the marvelous sights and shopping opportunities, traveling to Mexico City with your kids can be a nightmare. It can also be great fun. The difference lies in planning and choosing the right places to visit.
Traveling to Mexico City with Kids: Best Places and Activities
Visit Acuario Inbursa
Acuario Inbursa isn’t one of the most popular tourist destinations as it opened only recently. That’s actually a good thing as it means no crowds that’ll get in the way of your fun. The aquarium looks quite unassuming from the outside, but inside it’s a den of underwater marvels that kids will love. Another point in its favor is that the place is located in Polanco, one of the quieter neighborhoods.
Have a day of fun at Six Flags
Six Flags Mexico is a fantastic theme park best suitable for older kids. If you have a free day and a wish to spend it having fun, there would be no better place. The park now features several attractions dedicated to the Justice League characters. So, if your kid is a fan of these comic books and movies, they’ll definitely appreciate the Wonder Woman Coaster and Justice League: Battle for Metropolis. You’ll need a full day to explore the park, so plan ahead.
Go on a free tour of the city
Organized tours can be a bit stifling because of their set program. And you always feel bad about leaving if your kid gets bored because you’ve paid for it already. You can avoid all these issues by going on a free walking tour in Mexico City. There are quite a few of them, so you can explore any of the most popular spots. As these tours are rather informal, children tend to fare better there. If you travel with a large group, you can even have a unique custom tour designed for you that will be aimed towards kids specifically.
Explore the Chapultepec Park
Chapultepec Park is one of the greatest places to visit with kids in Mexico City. You can spend an entire day here and not explore all the attractions. So, if you are looking for some safe public place to keep your kids occupied, this will be perfect. Main attractions of the park include:
- National Museum of Anthropology.
This place is perfect if your kids are going through their ‘dinosaur’ phase. If not, the place is so exciting, they might get into the topic after this visit. - Zoo.
Is there a kid who doesn’t like zoos? Your children will absolutely love this one as they get to see pandas. There’s also a petting zoo for children, and all of it is free. - Museum of National History.
This one is an actual castle that belonged to the Emperor of Mexico (who was, surprisingly, French). - Papalote-Museo del Nino.
This is an actual museum for kids where they can touch the exhibits and learn about science, history, and nature through play. - Amusement Park.
The main reason why Chapultepec is one of the best places to visit with kids in Mexico City is that it has both educational and entertaining attractions. The La Feria de Chapultepec is a great amusement park with lots of rides for children of all ages. - Waterpark.
Here you can enjoy swimming and splashing pools. There’s also a lake for quiet boat rides elsewhere in the park.
Between all these major amusements, there are monuments, curiosities, and places to relax and just witness it all. You also have a chance to see a fantastic performance that is the Dance of the Flying Men (near the Anthropology Museum). It’s an incredible display of traditional acrobatics by the Totonac Indians.
