When you think of keeping your family healthy, what do you think of? Eating right, being active and getting regular check-ups at your doctor are just a few things I do to make sure that my family stays healthy. Something else that is very important is making sure that your family takes care of their eyes. I’ve had glasses ever since I was little so I am used to getting annual eye exams. Not only are they important for your eye health, they are important for your overall health too. They allow eye doctors to detect early signs of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, among others.
When my son was only two years old, he was diagnosed with a condition called strabismus which caused his eyes to constantly cross. His was so bad that he had to have surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. While the surgery worked, they warned us that he would most likely need lasses in the future. We made sure to get him into the eye doctor every year until finally last year he had to get glasses. I was worried how it would work out with him being so young but he has taken great care of his glasses and always wants to keep them on – after all, he can see now! As for kids making fun of him? It doesn’t happen because glasses are cool! So many kids at his school have glasses and the ones that don’t are always wanting to try his on.
While you’re busy the rest of the year making sure your kids don’t get sick this cold and flu season, don’t forget that getting them an annual comprehensive eye exam can help them learn and experience life to the fullest.
You can take your children to the eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam starting as young as six months old, then again at three years old, before kindergarten and every year after that. Some schools do in-school screenings but they don’t t provide the same level of detection as comprehensive eye exams.
Did you know that 80 percent of what we learn is through our eyes? That is why getting an eye exam is so important – for both adults and children! Common signs of vision problems include squinting, head tilting, avoiding “close work,” trouble focusing, continuous rubbing of eyes and headaches. 1 in 4 children has an undetected vision condition that can negatively impact learning.

This is great! I could use a new pair of glasses.
We are lucky that for the most part our health insurance covers our eye care needs. But I’ve looked into a secondary plan to help cover my husband’s glasses. They’re super expensive.
My son had to get eye glasses at age 11. With the cost of eye exams, lens and frames, it is good to know that there are options to save money.
My son also was diagnosed with an eye condition at two. As of now, the glasses seem to be working and hopefully surgery will not be needed.
My daughter recently had to get glasses. Poor thing was nearly blind in one eye 🙁
I am overdue for an eye exam. I try to stay on top of these things, but it’s been two years. Thanks for reminding me how important it is!
We are big on eye exams here. My older son has a lazy eyelid that has to be checked periodically to be sure it’s not hindering his vision. The 10 month old hasn’t had an exam yet, but will as soon as he’s old enough. With my husband and I both in glasses, we stay on top of eye health so hopefully our two boys can go without them.
I found out there is a VSP provider only 2.55 miles from my house! 🙂
I didn’t realize eye health could show other chronic illnesses. I don’t wear glasses, but I do need to get my eyes checked.
I need to get my eyes checked right now – and I am ready for new contacts. I have been wearing my glasses for 3 years now. That is not my normal M.O. Sunglasses would be nice, though!
If I had VSP, we would save $477 on a pair of glasses! With a three of us in the house that wears glasses, that is quite a savings!
I have worn glasses since I was 13 years old. I probably needed them much earlier than that, but my parents did not pay attention to things like that.
As someone without vision care, I totally appreciate this option. It’s so important to monitor eye health.
I used to have vsp and loved it! Saves you a ton they say the average is $330 on their website.
It’s definitely a good idea to start getting your kids eyes checked at an early age. My son had to get glasses in the first grade.
I like that VSP is a non profit so there are bigger savings for those who need glasses.
After more than 8 years of not having had an eye checkup, I knew it was time back in August. I knew I needed a stronger Rx for my glasses, yet I just put it off. I finally went and it’s done, and I’m glad I went! I hadn’t realized how much I needed new glasses until I got them. I wish my parents had taken me when I was younger, I think I needed glasses long before I got them, as an adult.
My husband and I are both long overdue for an eye exam. Our school district provides free eye exams so our kids have always been covered. VSP Vision Care sounds like a great program, I will have to learn more.
