I have been reading recently about a lot of home invasions in our city, some even close to where I live! I read a blog post from a blogger where someone was trying to break into their home and of course, there was that horrific video where someone broke in and harmed the mom while the child was in the room. Since I work from home with my three kids, I’m always scared that something like that will happen to us. I’ve read up on some tips on how to keep your home safe and thought I’d share them with you!
– Keep your dog out! Our dog is a very good “guard dog” and will bark at ANYONE that even walks by our house.
– Don’t leave packaging for expensive items on your curb for trash day. We have been making sure to do this for several years now. Anytime we get something valuable and it comes in a large box, we make sure to take a box cutter and cut it into pieces so it will easily fit into a trash bag.
– Install security cameras! This is something on my household to-do list because I know I would feel much more comfortable if we had them. CCTV Cameras has a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor security cameras. They even have hidden cameras available in items like a book or a clock {perfect for as a Nanny cam!} and all of their cameras are shipped from their warehouse in the USA. In some cases, you can even save on your home insurance by having a security camera which is a big reason my husband wants one!
– Install outdoor sensor lighting! We have a motion detector light for under our carport and driveway. I always get freaked out when they come on but they are usually raccoon’s trying to go through our garbage.
– This is a hard one for me, but don’t announce your vacations via social media! A lot of times I HAVE to tweet, Facebook and post about our trips since I am doing them for a review or conference, but this definitely is way for people to know you are not home. We usually have someone staying at hour house to stay with our dog, but I know not everyone is able to do this.
– Have a No Soliciting sign! We had SO many solicitors come through our neighborhood that I finally had to get a sign. I’ve read that a lot of break-ins can come from people that have tried to come to your door and sell something and they get a look at you and what your house looks like. Just don’t answer!
– But let them know you’re home! I don’t answer the door for anyone that knocks but I DO let them know that I am home. Whether it’s looking out your window and waving for them to leave or just letting them hear you in there, it lets them know that yes, someone is in the house and they should be moving on!
Hopefully some of these tips will help you and your family stay safe in your house! What are some of your tips on keeping your house safe?
