These days, life is so busy with my three year old twin girls and my eight year old son. It seems like our house is always hectic and we are always on the go. But when our day winds down and turns to night, I love sitting on the couch cuddling my girls or laying in bed with my son as we read a bedtime book. I marvel at how big they have gotten, remembering the days when I was pregnant with them and how anxious I was for them to come into the world but also how I loved being able to keep them safe and how they were MINE. Each kick or somersault in my belly meant so much more as I was communicating with them in a special way.
Before each of my kids were born, I sat down and wrote them a short letter of how I was looking forward to them being here – and my hopes and dreams for them. Each letter is tucked into their baby book and I can’t wait until they are older to read them. I’ve even added letters as the years have gone by – like right before my twins were born, I wrote my son another letter about how much I loved him and knew he was going to be a great big brother.
Grab the tissues because just in time for Mother’s day, Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers has created a video showing expectant moms and dads reading letters they’ve written to their baby. Take a look at the video and just try to keep the tears away and from jumping up to go give your little ones (and big ones!) a hug!
Watching this video made me think of the letters I wrote to my kids and how happy I was that I did that! I’ve been inspired to share a letter with you that I wrote to both Olivia and Evie.
Dear Olivia and Evelyn,
In just a few short weeks, you will be here and all of a sudden we will change from a family of three to a family of five. Your Dad and I are so excited to meet the two of you and every day we wonder who you will look like and who you will become. Your big brother Hayden can’t wait for you to come out also and he talks all the time about the toys that he will show you and what he wants to teach you. The two of you are so lucky – not only will you have an amazing big brother, but you’re going to have a built-in best friend with each other. I hope that you both will lean on each other and Hayden too. I always wanted a sibling and I’m so grateful to have the three of you and that you have each other. We can’t wait for you to be here and complete our family.

I’ve made a habit of writing notes to my wife she can keep, but I’d never thought about writing them to my kids. I do keep a journal, and the format of choice is a series of notes to my children, so I guess that counts, too.
