We came back from the ocean with a TON of rocks. Well, what felt like a ton. One weekend afternoon it was downright frigid outside and the kids were NEEDING something to do. Okay, I NEEDED something for them to do. They were so excited when I dumped the rocks into the sink, let them each have a job rinsing them off and drying them. As they did this, I dumped my supply of miscellaneous crafting supplies on the table.
And we started with a nice coating of paint. It actually hardly took any time at all to dry on the rocks. Once they were done painting a few, the first were ready to decorate using glue dots or good old white Elmer’s School Glue.
It looked like so much fun, I jumped in and we literally spent two hours making creatures, monsters, funny faces, little rock pictures and my son even made me one with my name on it, designating it his “love rock”.
We had a blast making memories of our beach trip out of these rocks. Have you ever decorated rocks or some other piece of nature?

This would be such a fun idea for my 3 and 5 year old sons. I may have to do this on a cold snowy or rainy day!

Ah, I love this idea! Maggie’s school made pet rocks a few months ago for art projects – she still has hers in room and loves it! Such a great craft idea – and a great way to remember a place/vacation with a pet rock 🙂

Once upon a time, many years ago, some enterprising people made money selling Pet Rocks. We just made our own, like you did.

What a great and creative way to spend a rainy or snowy day with the kids and grandkids. Whenever kids get to express themselves in some form of creation they’re happy. 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing.

I have never thought of painting rocks, but now I’m having all sorts of ideas about painting them and displaying them. I can’t wait to find some great rocks to paint.
