A good sugar cookie recipe is like a good pair of jeans. Good to go anywhere, can dress them up for any occasion and EVERYONE loves a good pair of jeans-and a good sugar cookie!
I have three cookie cookbooks. That is all they have in them. Pages upon pages and many dedicated to sugar cookies! Which are one of my personal faves! Out of all of them, I have created the following recipe. It holds it’s shape when cut out with a cookie cutter, it is moist and it has a really nice flavor.
These are decorated for Halloween, but you could do Christmas or Valentine’s Day hearts!
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons softened butter
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter
Cream sugars, butter, vanilla and almond extract and one egg. In separate bowl sift together dry ingredients. Combine both and mix until smooth. Put cookie dough in fridge for an hour. Roll out to 1/4″ thickness and cut out shapes. Cook at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes, until edges just begin to be golden. Let cool on pan.
To make icing, put 2 cups of powdered sugar in bowl and add color either liquid food coloring or gel food coloring. Add a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract. Mix, adding milk until the consistency is thick, but smooths and settles to a shiny surface when untouched. Smooth on cookie and let stand until it hardens.
What holiday baking do you do every year? Are sugar cookies on the list?

I love cookies! And these seem like they’d be similar to a shortbread cookie with the powdered sugar.

Sugar cookies are my holiday favorite but one of the only ones I don’t make from scratch. They never have enough flavor but maybe I’ll try it with the almond extract!

This is a recipe different from others, I’ve not used softened butter, powdered sugar or cream of tartar in sugar cookies – I must try these as I need to make more sugar cookies and I’m feeling adventurous – these look soo good!

I got a chuckle out of this, as I was just looking at my cookbooks yesterday, the ones I’ve had for ages, and the only pages that are all worn are the cookie section! I haven’t seen a sugar cookie recipe with powdered sugar, and it is smaller amount of cookies/flour than most, which is good. I’d love to try it!

I make sugar cookies every year for my daughter’s classroom parties. Just made some today for her Halloween party. Kids seemed uninterested in the cookies, but pigged out on chips, pudding and commercial stuff. Guess this generation doesn’t appreciate the art of home baking. Haha well, I liked them.

The great thing about sugar cookies, aside from being very versatile for different holidays, is that the kids can help make them and actually be helping.
