We all read the articles. The stories of kids who are picked on and bullied horribly until they just can’t take it anymore break my heart. I have young children. It won’t be many years until they will be exposed to this epidemic in some way. ‘The Fat Boy Chronicles’ is a story that tackles this hard subject.
Synopsis: Inspired by a true story, The Fat Boy Chronicles follows Jimmy Winterpock, the subject of brutal high school bullying. Jimmy overcomes the torment by finding the strength to focus on his goal to lose weight and win over the girl of his dreams. Based on the acclaimed novel by Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan, the film has been heralded by critics for bringing real world issues that affect teenagers to an audience looking for answers. Dr. John Barge, Superintendent of Schools – State of Georgia declares it “a must see for every parent and educator.”
Jimmy struggles with teenage obesity. He is the victim of relentless teasing by both his peers and the adults in his life. But instead of caving, he decides to get his life under control in the ways that he can. He makes lifestyle changes by eating healthier and exercising. His parents are supportive and his Dad even joins him when he runs. This message of parents supporting their children and helping them through their battles is an important one for kids and parents. It shows parents the positive effects that they can have on their children. And for children, it shows that they should reach out for this help.
There are lessons in this movie for parents, educators and teenagers. It will open up conversations on the subject of bullying and how it could be affecting your children right now. The underlying message that we need to celebrate people’s differences will stick with you.

Good review on this important topic. The book is also a great way to connect parents and their kids. Lots of schools use both to start the conversation about bullying and not being a bystander.
