It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and Hayden heads back to school in a few weeks. When the school year ended, I wanted to make sure that he kept up with his reading and learning – I wanted him to be ready for second grade! I think he has had a lot of fun reading this summer thanks to the and the Energizer Bunny! The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge theme this summer is “Power Up & Read,” powered by Energizer® and boy, did we have a lot of fun reading adventures this summer!
The is a free online reading program dedicated to stopping the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out. We’ve had fun reading books this summer AND playing on Scholastic’s website where Hayden was able to unlock original short stories by bestselling children’s authors whenever he would reach a reading milestone.
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” thanks to ENERGIZER®! The program has energized us to find new places to read like reading in bed {so comfy!} to reading outside. We’ve had books along with us the whole summer plus a new little buddy you’ll spot in some of our pictures – the Energizer Bunny!
It really goes to show you that if you can make reading FUN, kids will be begging to do it! I’ve always been a huge reader – the other day, Hayden asked what my hobby was and I told him reading! – and I love hat I can set an example and inspire my kids, too. Programs like the powered by Energizer make it so much fun!
Monday Minutes
In an effort to log as many minutes as possible through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge AND to break the world record for summer reading, Scholastic is setting special weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday we’ll be announcing a#MondayMinutesGoal, the number of minutes for kids to read together in one week (by the following Monday).
Whether your child or student is reading independently aloud or together with you, let’s share their success and keep the momentum going! Here’s how:
– Have your child log his/her minutes on the SRC website or on a paper log/piece of paper
– Take a picture of him/her proudly displaying their minutes
– Share it on social using #MondayMinutesGoal and #SummerReading!
Hayden loves updating his minutes on the website because he likes to unlock challenges and spin the wheel. We always make a huge deal of him logging in his minutes – we are so proud of him!
You sill have time to participate in the and the #MondayMinutesGoal! The program goes through September 4th, 2015.

We enjoy reading quite often too! Love that you can log minutes on the website and track 😉
It is so important to keep kids reading. My boys and I are BIG fans of Scholastic books.
Keeping reading fun can be a challenge with all the other distractions but it’s so important to ensure your kids learn to love reading when they are young! It looks like you’re doing a great job with that!
I wish I had known about the program before now but I’m glad it’s not too late! We will get started Monday morning! Thanks for the giveaway, too. I see some books my kids will love!
Love that you can track it! I try to encourage my boys to read as much as they can.
Scholastic made it so simple to track minutes read and encourage kids to keep reading. I signed mine up for the Summer challenge and they love seeing their total add up.
Such a great program to encourage reading. I participate in our local libraries reading program each summer.
I love encouraging kids to read!!! My kids read 30 minutes a day and I love that it means I can indulge for 30 minutes of reading too!
Reading is really important for children of all ages.
This would be awesome for my son! He just learned to read last year for kindergarten so I’m trying lots of ways to keep him interested in reading over the summer.
