This post is brought to you by Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.
When Hayden was born, I put a lot of thought in what to pack in a diaper bag. As a new mom, I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t caught out of the house without anything I would need. So those first few years, I had A LOT of stuff in my diaper bag, some of it never used. When the girls were born five years later, I was thrown a bit with having to pack a bag for two babies but now I’ve got it down. The girls are three years old now and we are out of the house quite a bit, so I make sure that we have everything we need in my backpack without it being too overwhelming.
For the first few years, I used a large diaper bag that was big enough to hang on the back of a double stroller. It held a lot of stuff but once the girls really started moving, I switched to a backpack. It’s easier to wear when I’m running after two toddlers and isn’t banging on my hip or weighing one shoulder down. I actually wish I would have just used a backpack to start with and if you’re a new mom hunting for a diaper bag, consider just getting a backpack as it will grow with you for the next few years!
If you’ve got toddlers, you have realized by now you don’t need the same stuff in your bag from when they were babies. Here are my must-haves for what to pack in a diaper bag for a toddler!
Diaper/Pull-ups/Undies
Your toddler may still be in diapers, wearing pull-ups or already in undies (way to go!), but you want to make sure you have plenty in your bag. My girls are halfway to being potty trained so I carry around plenty of diapers still in addition to some pull-ups. I never have less than 6 diapers in my backpack at a time.
Wipes
By now, you know that wipes just aren’t for wiping bottoms! I always have wipes a package of wipes with me – they are great for wiping faces, hands, surfaces and more! With toddlers, you especially want to make sure you have wipes in your bag!
Bourdeaux’s Butt Paste
I’ve been using Bourdeaux’s Butt Paste for years now – it was recommended to me when Hayden was a baby and I’ve continued using it with the girls! I remember when he was first getting diaper rashes and how frustrating it was to get rid of them. But once I discovered Bourdeaux’s Butt Paste, it became a must-have in our house. I always make sure to include it as a gift for new moms so they don’t have to go through the frustration like I did as a new mom.
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste was developed by a pharmacist and a father of four. It starts healing on contact and is paraben-, preservative, and phthalate-free, and contains no artificial fragrances. It’s available in Original Butt Paste (for minor or moderate rash), Maximum Strength (for stubborn rash), and All Natural (for minor or moderate rash but made with natural ingredients and is petrolatum free).
Snacks
Toddlers are notorious for always being hungry but always being picky. I make sure to always carry a decent amount of snacks in my backpack to be able to stop my toddlers from hangry fits. I bring cups filled with ice water too or even juice boxes.
Change of Clothing
With babies, it’s important to pack extra clothing for those blow-outs and spit-ups but it’s the same with toddlers still. I make sure to pack an extra pair of clothing for each of my girls just in case. Evie gets really car sick so we have had to stop and change clothes a few times.
Sunscreen, Sanitizer and Plastic Bags
Some other items that always stay in my backpack are sunscreen, hand sanitizer and plastic bags. You never know when you will need any of those!
When you’re out and about with a toddler, you definitely want to make sure you have a fully stocked bag! I’d love to hear some of the stuff you keep packed in yours and if there is anything I can add to mine!

Diapers, wipes and a toy or book. If we’re sitting and waiting somewhere it’s always nice to have a toy for my toddler.

A must have in my bag would be boogie wipes. Those suckers are fantastic. I mean I always have other wipes, but I like to have those one hand for other things.
