Pecan is a common nut found in many households. Many like it for its taste, while some consume it for the many health benefits. This blog will walk you through pecan’s background, its numerous varieties, and much more!
Introduction:
It’s almost June and Scarlett is panicking about what gift she should buy for her older sister’s birthday. She called up her friends in the office and neighborhood. The majority of recommendations pointed out taking her sister shopping, getting a spa, and whatnot! Although she was convinced and thought of making plans, she wasn’t satisfied with the idea. Scarlett wanted to give her sister something that she’d use every day. Searching and scrolling through the internet, she stumbled upon a blog about ‘Pecan Nuts’. Reading the blog, she thought that a gift pack of different flavored pecans would be the perfect extra touch to her sister’s birthday gift.
Let’s take a glance through Scarlett’s notes about the pecan gift box:

Pecan, scientifically known as Carya illinoinensis, belongs to the walnut family which is found mostly in North America. It has the highest fat content compared to any other vegetable. Its caloric value is close to butter. Being rich in texture and distinct in flavor, pecan is one of the most loved nuts in America.
This dentist who does high-quality teeth whitening in Redwood City also adds that pecan nuts are beneficial to your dental health. They are low in carbohydrates and stimulate saliva production when eaten.
How are Pecans Consumed?
Pecans can be eaten raw, salted, and also sweet. Usually, the nut is used in coffee cakes, pastries, and in conjunction with chocolate. To name a few, these are the best desserts made with pecans:
- Pecan Pie
It is a traditional Thanksgiving, classic fall dessert filled with crunchy pecans.
- Caramel Pecan Pie Cheesecake Bars

Now that Scarlett knows what exactly pecans are and what can be made with them, she looks for different varieties she could wrap, ribbon, and give to her sister as a present.
PECAN NUT VARIETIES
There are almost 500 different varieties of pecan available in the market. All of these are very similar but have different shapes, textures, oil content, and flavor. Out of these 500 varieties – Desirable, Stuart, and Cape Fear are the most popular and commonly used.
- Desirable Pecan
These are the golden standard pecan. In the United States, these are the most planted pecan crops! It’s long in shape and has a medium to the softshell.
- Cape Fear Pecan
This variety is mostly grown in Texas and Mexico. The nutshell is slimmer than most of the other pecan varieties. In appearance, it is golden in color, rich in flavor, and has a thinner shell.
- Stuart Pecans
These are native to Southeast areas of the United States, Georgia in particular. This variety is a little smaller than the Desirable, mainly medium in size. The shell is harder and thicker than most of the other varieties.
