Do you ever feel like family nights at home are a bit repetitive? At Modernize, we understand that it feels great to break away from normal family routines every once in awhile. Treat yourselves and your kids to an extra special family night in by hosting your very own movie night, using these tips to make it a red carpet worthy event.
Create an atmosphere
The first thing you need to do to get ready for your movie night is to set up your home theater. If you’re lucky enough to have a room devoted to media, then you’re all set. If you’re making the most of existing living space, then fashion your own theater with a makeshift movie screen (the television will do perfectly well here), comfortable seating, and a snack bar. Stock your snack bar with all your favorite cinema treats, but don’t forget the popcorn!

Theme it
Make your movie night extra special with a few personal touches. Get the family involved by making your own tickets and decorations for the night. Generic movie theater snacks and decorations are great, but if you theme the whole night around your film of choice then everyone will get even more involved. If you’re watching Up, stock your living room with colorful balloons and dress up like little old men and Boy Scouts. For The Lion King, transform your living room into a savanna and wear animal masks. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
Feed the family
Along with all of the amazing special additions you have made to your fun-filled family movie night, you still need to remember to feed the troops. While movie snacks are great, if you have young children and are short on fitting in enough time for a routine meal and movie, consider something easy. You can get takeout and eat the best Philly cheesesteak in Philly. Easy-to-eat food is perfect whether you are watching a movie indoors or out.
Cater to everyone
Choose an age appropriate film that everyone will love. Disney and Pixar films are particularly great for reaching all ages, with slapstick comedy aimed at children and more mature jokes that will go right over the kids’ heads. Remember though, that the youngest viewers in your audience may not make it through the screening without fidgeting and roaming around, so consider a few movie alternatives such as crafts and themed activities to keep bored minds out of trouble while everyone else enjoys the movie.

Go outside
If the weather allows, take your movie night into the backyard. Nothing says summer nights like a trip to the drive-in, so save yourself the drive (and some money!) by building your own. Hang a white sheet between two trees and project your movie just like the professionals. Make it extra special with cozy blankets and cushions, and if you’re feeling particularly creative, make your own cars from cardboard boxes. Before you know it, you’ll have a movie night everyone will remember for years to come.
