PlayTown My Story Maker App Review

I don’t know about you, fellow parents, but I *try* really hard to play downloaded apps before I let my child play with them.  It’s way too easy for developers to add in weird stuff that I may not be ready for him to learn just yet or it may have ads that pop up where he can spend real money, among many other things.  When I was given the chance to download the PlayTown My Story Maker app, I had to see what it was about all for myself.

This app.is.FUN.  Oh my gosh. I played with it for a good hour here and there without any kids nearby!

The premise is that you are the director – you design your own cast of characters, scenes and record – and watch the movie you created!  It is designed for kids 3-8, and my almost 3 year old REALLY enjoys the Storybook mode where beautiful scenes are read by a delightful female voice.  He enjoyed the “Travel Around the World” scene with photos of Africa, the Coliseum, the Statue of Liberty, and more.  I love the educational aspect.

So first, I chose a Playset – Travel Around the World.  You can choose to dress your characters in the dressroom or just go straight to “Let’s Play.”  In the dressroom, there is a lot of control on how you want your characters to look.  You can choose clothing, hats, accessories in plenty of colors to make them your own. To make it simpler for smaller children, you can also just choose your character and swipe left or right to change outfits and accessories.  Very smart touch!

Next you choose a Stage and your cast (Toy).  Once you are all set up, you can hit Record and make your very own movie!  The toys in the movies make small sounds where your child can record his or her voice. You can also further personalize your movies by adding in your own stage (by using the camera on your phone).

Since my little son is still a bit too young to make his own movies yet, he spends a lot of time in the Storybook mode, where the author reads to him.  Here are a few screenshots of his favorite book – Travel Around the World.  Each Playset has a unique storybook!  I will be recommending this app to ALL my friends who have children who need to use their imagination and create wonderful art!  Thank you, PlayTown, for creating a clean, educational and super FUN quality app!
