The other day, we were driving in the car when Hayden started asking all of these questions about planets. He wanted to know which one was my favorite, why they were so far away and why Pluto wasn’t a planet anymore. With this sudden interest, I knew I had to take advantage of that curiosity. The best way? Books!
I’ve always been a huge reader and hope to pass down that love of reading to my three kids. With summer approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in the lack of routine and schedule. That’s why I’ll have all three of my kids participating in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge! Yes, even Olivia and Evie who are two years old. Scholastic has some great summer reading book lists for all age groups.
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Scholastic has joined together with ENERGIZER® to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading. Parents can sign up kids beginning May 4, 2015 and runs through September 4, 2015.
We received a great assortment of books from Scholastic to kick off our summer reading program. Hayden was so excited to start reading the books and I loved seeing how excited he was. It was fantastic to kick off our summer reading challenge by reading a The Magic School Bus – one of my favorite series growing up!
It’s easy to get started! Just sign up your child for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and you’ll have access to printables such as reading certificates, log sheets, pledges, booklists, and more, to help you encourage your kids this summer.
Hayden and I logged into his account where you can easily update how many minutes they have read each day and where they can unlock stories and earn prizes, too.

Will your child be participating in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge?
Disclosure: I was compensated for this post as part of a partnership with Scholastic but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
We love Scholastic summer program. They have so many books to choose from
Our local library has a challenge that we sign up for every year. Didn’t realize Scholastic had their own also!
My kids always did the summer reading programs when they were younger…as teens they only have 1 or 2 books they HAVE to read for school but I always make them pick more!
I love the Summer Reading Challenge. It’s a great way to keep kids interested in reading over the summer.
This is such a great program to encourage reading, we participated last year and my kids loved it! We will certainly be doing the same this summer as well.
This really is a great incentive for kids to want to read! I will have to sign up both of my daughters this year!
A summer reading program is a great way to keep the kids engaged during summer vacation.
