Spending the day outside sprucing up the exterior of your home doesn’t always have to be as laborious as expected. There are some ways to have some fun in the sun while increasing the curb appeal of your home. In fact, there are three really simple projects that even those who lack the handy man skills can tackle. These projects can add that dapper look to the outside of the house without the frustration that accompanies a major exterior face-lift!
Stair Riser Garden
This fantastic project idea is great for those who do not have the time to weed, yet love garnishing their home’s exterior with flowers. Simply go the local lumber store and purchase two stair risers. Then, buy three rectangular flower boxes and attach them to the risers where the steps would go. Viola! There are three perfect places to plant flowers. Place the newly constructed flowerbed steps somewhere outside that needs some color, and fill it full of annual flowers of your choice. This project will not only eliminate the need for weeding, it will also add come color and flare to your yard.
Add Exterior Shutters
This is another inexpensive way to add a bit of unique flavor to your home’s façade. New shutters with a window box of flowers can really make the front of your house pop. Shutters of all sorts (I’m particularly partial to board and batten style shutters) can complement your exterior, and they range in style and size, so there is sure to be an option that is perfect for your home. They are very easy to hang, and the hardware is included with the shutters so that hanging them is a breeze. First measure your windows to make sure you know what size of shutter to purchase, and then choose a style that fits your taste and budget. Next, locate the installation hardware that is included with the shutters. Finally hang the shutters installation hardware. It’s a quick and simple way to add some class to your home’s exterior.
Tile Mailbox Post
A tiled mailbox post will certainly make your home stand out on the block as both unique and decorative. This project will require a few materials: simple hand tile cutters, scissors, premixed thin set, and a decorative tile of your choice. You can use the decorative tile mosaics or standard square tile; it is your choice—the stone mosaics are what seem to work the best. Use the materials to tile your mailbox post. First measure and cut your tile. Then, apply the premixed thin set to the back of the tile (this seems to create less mess than applying it to the post itself). Finally place the tile up the post. It’s that simple! When you are done, you will no longer have a wooden mailbox post; instead, you will have added some zest to the outside.
There you have it. If you are not a project sort of person, these three simple and easy DIY outdoor projects are sure to add some flare to the outside of your home without breaking the bank or your back!
According to Jackson James of LawnStarter Kansas City, small DIY projects to improve your home’s curb appeal increase the value of your home anywhere from 3% to 15%.

These are great ideas. I’m especially fond of shutters, and love board and batten style shutters. I did add them when I had a house, and every time I look at a picture of a house, if it doesn’t have shutters, I imagine what it would be with them! The stair riser garden is adorable, too!
